Police: Teens Offered No Aid to Mableton Hit-and-Run Victim

They are in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on multiple charges, including felony murder.

Four teenage gang members are accused of repeatedly punching and kicking a Mableton man early Sunday morning until he became incapacitated, then doing nothing to help him after a vehicle struck him in the middle of a busy 5-lane highway.

One day after the teenagers were arrested in connection with the hit-and-run that killed 36-year-old Joshua Heath Chellew, Cobb arrest warrants offer new details about the final moments of Chellew's life.

Mableton residents Jekari Strozier, 19; Antonio Pass, 18; Johnathan Anthony, 18; and Kemonta Bonds, 18, allegedly got into an argument with Chellew at 6211 Mableton Pkwy. The warrants do not specify what preceded the argument, which quickly turned violent.

All four teenagers "did strike out at said victim, together," police said. "Accused ... males did pursue said victim into the middle of Mableton Parkway and did knock said victim to the ground; did continue to assault said victim after he was knocked on the ground, by kicking and punching him; then walked away from said victim, leaving him helpless in the roadway."

The teens were there, police said, when a small red vehicle struck Chellew without stopping. Witnesses on the scene told investigators that "at no time did accused ... males attempt to aid said victim or to stop the approaching vehicle."

Chellew was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital.

He died, police said, "as a result of the assault and impact with the vehicle."

The teens are in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on multiple charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.

Though the driver of the small red vehicle has surrendered to authorities, charges are not expected to be filed against him, Sgt. Dana Pierce with the Cobb County Police Department said in a statement Tuesday morning. The driver's identity has not been revealed.
