Georgia Charter Schools Amendment Appears to Pass

The constitutional amendment grants the state authority to approve charter schools, whether local school boards want them or not.

Georgia voters gave the state more authority over charter schools on Tuesday, passing a constitutional amendment empowering a commission to overrule local school districts that reject charter school petitions. With all counties fully reporting, the hotly contested amendment had support of 58.5 percent of voters. See selected county results below. It was an emotionally charged issue that in some ways united Georgians across political and demographic lines. A Peach Pundit poll from late October had found "no significant difference [in support] based on whether a voter is a Republican or a Democrat, a male or a female, or based on race." Camille Cottrell, an Emory University instructor and card-carrying Democrat, is an example of the …

Cobb Sheriff Wins Another Term

The sheriff’s race was one of only a few contested races in Cobb County.

Cobb County Republican Sheriff Neil Warren won another term late Tuesday night, seemingly beating Democrat Gregory Gilstrap. It was Neil's third victory over Gilstrap. Warren won 172,157 votes (59%) over Democrat Gregory Gilstrap, who received 117,320 votes (41%). The sheriff’s race was one of only a few contested races in Cobb County. Many elections were decided in the primary. Warren was sworn-in as interim sheriff in December 2003, following the previous sheriff’s resignation. He was first elected as the county’s 42nd sheriff in November 2004. Warren oversees a department where duties include courthouse security, county jail operations and executing criminal warrants. In 2011, Warren said deputies served more than 24,000 criminal …

Maybe if he'd take running for office seriously and put some effort into campaigning he would have done better. But he should know that most of the 41% will not donate money to help him. Hard to convert government handouts into donations.   more ›

Cobb Election Night Watch Parties

Both major political parties will have public events on Tuesday night.

Cobb voters who want to watch Tuesday night's election returns with those of similar partisan tastes will have their own dedicated places to do so. Both major parties will have official watch parties at hotels near East Cobb, and the public is invited. The Cobb Republican Party has scheduled a "Victory Party" from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Suites Northwest Atlanta, 2999 Windy Hill Road, located at the intersection of Powers Ferry Road. Admission to the event is free, and so are hors d'oeuvres. There will be a cash bar and large-screen televisions to watch returns. Few Contested Races in Cobb County

One contested race is for sheriff, but most predictors don’t expect much of a contest.

Few of Cobb County’s elected officials up for election this year have challengers in today’s election. Some had to only win the primary in July to win. In other cases, there never was an opponent. One contested race is for sheriff, but most predictors don’t expect much of a contest. Cobb County’s Sheriff Neil Warren is facing off today against Democratic challenger Gregory Gilstrap, whom he soundly defeated in 2008. Warren was sworn-in as interim sheriff in December 2003, following the previous sheriff’s resignation. He was first elected as the county’s 42nd sheriff in November 2004. Unchallenged in the recent Republican primary, Warren oversees a department where duties include courthouse security, county jail operations and executing …

Do You Support The Charter Schools Amendment?

On Nov. 6, voters will decide if the state of Georgia can create charter schools, or will those decisions remain at the local levels.

This week, voters will decide if Georgia can create a state commission authorizing charter schools. The issue has stirred controversy all across metro Atlanta. Some Democratic leaders are calling the ballot biased and misleading. Others, however, are reaching across political aisles to support the amendment. On Saturday, Oct. 27, two state lawmakers - one Republican, the other a Democrat -headlined a rally in support of the amendment.

The solution to this problem is some where in the middle. This is a strange topic because it has strange bed fellows. For groups that believe in states rights but don't believe in county rights seems strange to me. If this proposal works as envisioned, let's imagine four years down the road. Will we have charter school next to every public school? Will this be efficient for our tax dollar? …   more ›

25% of Those Registered Vote Early in Cobb

In this year’s 15 early voting days, 83,800 cast ballots in person, 19,500 by mail, and 500 by e-ballot out of 415,300.

Out of the 400,000-plus active registered voters in Cobb, more than 20 percent went to voting booths before Election Day, while an additional 4.8 percent cast ballots by mail or online.  That makes for a combined early turnout of roughly 25 percent. During early voting in the 2008 election, a much higher percentage voted—but they had more than double the time to do it. Then, in the 31 days of early and 45 days of mail-in voting, 152,400 (38.4 percent) of the 397,000 registered voters filled in their ballots. In this year’s 15 early voting days, 83,800 cast ballots in person, 19,500 by mail, and 500 by e-ballot out of the 415,300 active registered voters.
