The Cobb Board of Commissioners will review County Manager David Hankerson's recommendation of a new senior services department head for the county.
Cobb County Manager David Hankerson is expected to ask the Board of Commissioners to hire Jessica Gill as the county's new senior services director at Tuesday's regular board meeting. Gill, who currently works as the area manager of business development for Sunrise Senior Living of Atlanta, has more than a decade of experience in the senior care industry, said county spokesman Robert Quigley. Gill also served as a public health advisor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), president of the company Aging by Design and health and wellness director for the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Area Agency on Aging. This Wednesday, April 24, and next Wednesday, May 1, you can enjoy a meal at an area Ruby Tuesday's while helping ensure local senior citizens have hot and nutritious meals daily. Ruby Tuesday's Community Giveback Program will donate 20 percent of purchases from those two days to Cobb Senior Services Meal on Wheels. Cobb Senior Services is looking for donations for its seventh annual Senior Santa on Dec. 14. This special event is an excellent opportunity for homebound seniors in Cobb to enjoy an afternoon of holiday cheer, food, gifts and fellowship with others. Residents can help by donating new generic items or making a $30 donation to adopt a senior for the event. Suggested items for donation include bath sets, combs, brushes, pajamas, healthy snacks, hat and glove sets, gift cards, blood pressure monitors, pens and pencils, postage stamps, stocking stuffers and large print books. Cobb Senior Services staff will officially open its new Senior Wellness Center, located at 1150 Powder Springs St., Marietta, during a ribbon cutting ceremony 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 29. A tour of the facility will follow. Quarterly classes will begin this fall at the Wellness Center and staff is looking for qualified instructors. Cobb Senior Services and Cobb County Animal Control are partnering to help senior cats find homes with senior adults. "Cats make wonderful companions and are relatively easy to care for, offering unconditional love," a release from the county says. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved the design for the new Austell Neighborhood Senior Center.
Seniors throughout the South Cobb area can get excited now that the design plans and timeline for their new Austell Neighborhood Senior Center have been unveiled. The Cobb Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the Choate Construction design at their Tuesday night meeting. The original Austell Senior Center was located in Austell’s Legion Park. It had flooded twice in a four-year span, the last time during the historical flood of September 2009. The new center will be located in Clarkdale Park, a county park right down the road from Legion Park.
