Whitefield Academy will be celebrating today. This year, the school's boys basketball team took home its third championship in the school's history. A celebration rally will be held at the school today at 2:05 p.m. "It is no secret that we push and challenge our players, I am proud of them for stepping up and demonstrating grit and valor; values that are at the core of our program," Coach Tyrone Johnson said this week. Whitefield competed seven times in the last 12 years, and also won the state title in 2003 and 2009. Whitefield Academy wasn't the only local school to make the playoffs this year. The private school in Mableton celebrated Black History Month with an array of guest speakers and activities.
Whitefield Academy celebrated Black History month with field trips, artists’ displays, special chapels, and an array of guest speakers. This year’s program focused on the arts, highlighting the hard work and dedication of musicians, artists, and entertainers who struggled against racism and adversity to share their talent and pave the way of success for future generations. During the month, African American speakers were featured Whitefield’s weekly chapel services. Courtney Brooks, the varsity basketball coach at Benjamin Banneker High School, spoke at the first Black History Month chapel. Whitefield Academy's varsity basketball team defeated Landmark Christian 71 to 45 Saturday night to win it's fourth consecutive region title, going undefeated in region play all four years. Whitefield has won their region championship eight of the last 11 years and won state titles in 2003 and 2009. "Honestly, I could not be more proud of our guys," said Tyrone Johnson, Whitefield Academy's varsity basketball coach. "God has truly blessed us this season, it is a huge accomplishment to represent Region 9 as the tournament champion. I think it puts us in position to acheive our remaining goals for the year. The Walker School has found a new head football coach after a national search that followed three consecutive 3-7 seasons. The Marietta school has hired John East, the former athletic director at Whitefield Academy, to lead the football program and serve as an assistant athletic director, the school announced Thursday. Whitefield Academy's track superstar, senior Cameron Thornton, has signed with Texas A&M University, winner of three NCAA National Championships in men’s track and field. Cameron, who graduates in May, placed 9th in the world while representing U.S.A. in IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France in July. He was also a featured South Cobb Patch Whiz Kid. He certainly has a long list of athletic achievements to add to his resume this year. Each year, a senior from an accredited high school is selected as a DAR Good Citizen by its faculty and students.
Whitefield Academy senior Ben McNally of Atlanta was recently recognized as a Good Citizen by the Fort Peachtree Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Son of Peter and Charlotte McNally, Ben is one of three students to receive the award. Each year one senior class member is selected within an accredited high school by its faculty and students to be the DAR Good Citizen. Each student chosen must exemplify the qualities of a good citizen which are dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. Once chosen, the students enter the DAR Good Citizens Scholarship Contest. First the student writes a description of how he or she is an example of a good citizen. This is …

Construction of Whitefield Academy’s new Upper School building continues “under budget and on schedule” as a school official told Patch this week. Designed by the architectural firm Perkins+Will, the new Upper School is being built by Van Winkle Construction and is set to be completed by early summer. The 37,000 square foot academic building, part of an $11.5 million capital campaign to improve Whitefield’s campus, will house 14 classrooms, four science labs, offices, and a 400-seat black box theater for dramatic performances, concerts, recitals, and weekly chapel services. This young golf dynamo is already gaining national exposure.
Madison Barnett, an eighth grader at Whitefield Academy, is already showing signs of being the next Tiger Woods (only in terms of golf) on the green. The Barnetts signed their daughter up for a local golf program two years ago after hearing that many women’s athletic scholarships go to waste. Madison, 13, competed on her All Star team at the Junior League Golf World Series at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth against teams from Dallas, TX, San Diego, Tampa and elsewhere. Not only was Madison one of the only girls on her roster, she was one of the only African-Americans in the competition. Whitefield Academy’s academic team won first place in the Fall Georgia Academic Team Association (GATA) quizbowl tournament at Chattahoochee High School last Sunday. Whitefield competed against 48 other teams from public and private high schools across Georgia in the quizbowl tournament. Quizbowl is an academic competition with questions ranging over the entire spectrum of high school subjects as well as a number of questions on current events, sports, and popular culture. Falcons and Eagles still in playoffs contention, Wolfpack playing for pride
Despite a decisive loss last week, Pebblebrook can still make the state playoffs. The Falcons are third in Region 4-AAAAA. South Cobb is right behind them in fourth. The top four teams make the playoffs at the end of the regular season, so if both teams can string together a few more wins, they will both earn postseason berths. On the other end of the spectrum, Whitefield Academy is out of the playoff race in Region 5-A. The Wolfpack have a couple more chances to earn back some pride, but it won't be easy.
