These Sneakers Were Made For Walking, And That's Just What They'll Do

Wednesday was National Walking Day, but you can incorporate walking into your everyday life.

Wednesday was the American Heart Association's National Walking Day. Because Americans are spending more time at work than ever before, the AHA started the initiative to encourage employees to wear sneakers to work and to take at least 30 minutes of their day to get up and walk. Just because National Walking Day has ended does not mean that its purpose has. Walking is one of the simplest way to incorporate activity into your day. It can be a peaceful solo stroll or a time to gab with friends and neighbors who want to walk as well. You can join a community walking group, like the Mableton Improvement Coalition's weekly walking/running group, which meets at the Mable House Complex at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. With the incredible Silver Comet …

Push Yourself to the Limit, Not Over It

As I create healthy habits, I learn that I have to pace myself.

I like pushing myself. I like the feeling of working hard, of being busy and productive. Last week, I pushed myself too much. I was wrking out to one of my Turbo Fire DVDs and all I could see was how my body would look once these workouts paid off. I was doing it, boy! But then, I got too hot. I felt sick. I threw up. I was reminded then that becoming healthy is a process, a journey, and it is not going to happen overnight the way I would like it to. After visiting my first and only Weight Watchers class this week at Orange Hill Baptist Church, I realized that I should not rely upon the accountability I wanted from Weight Watchers. However, I did learn that ultimately Weight Watchers and any lifestyle is about choices. Weight Watchers …

Kiri- Saw this app and thought about you, it's similar to Weight Watchers and is provided by Livestrong. You can join online at livestrong.org or through your mobile phone. The iphone app is $2.99 and it tracks your food intake, weight and exercise daily and allows you to set a weekly weight loss goal. Been using it for two weeks and dropped 4 pounds, my husband is also using it but only lost 1lb…   more ›

Have a Heart-to-Heart with Yourself This and Every Month

Instead of looking at improving your heart health as punishment, think of it as an opportunity to have a great time doing something you love and an excuse to let loose.

February is known as Heart Health Month, but you don't need an official day or month to take care of yourself. On this Leap Day (bonus day), step out and do something for you. Move for your heart's sake. My favorite heart healthy motto is “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” So as we embark on another month, remember, as you work on maintaining your existing fitness routine or embark on a new one as part of your New Year’s resolution, just remember that getting in shape isn’t always about how you look on the outside – the inside matters, too.  Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and in Georgia, and women have it the worst – one in four will die of heart disease this year…

Take a (Healthy) Hike

Some doctors are prescribing hikes instead of pills.

Everyone knows that exercise is one key to being healthy, but not everyone enjoys going to the gym.  Georgia’s state park system has teamed up with the Georgia Association of Physicians Assistants (GAPA) to make healthy living a bit more fun.  Through the new “Rx for Fitness” Program, physician assistants can prescribe healthy hikes in the great outdoors, and patients can turn in their “prescriptions” for free park passes.   “Rx for Fitness” is part of the State Park system’s new Tons of Fun Fitness Challenge which encourages citizens to use outdoor recreation as part of their regular exercise. Park visitors may find that exploring a canyon is more fun than a step machine, and that hiking along a waterfall burns more calories than a …

GO GEORGIA!! Exercise is one key to being healthy! Georgia’s state park system has teamed up with the Georgia Association of Physicians Assistants (GAPA) to make healthy living a bit more fun. Members of GAPA will be able to help their patients in a new way, by identifying those who need more exercise and suggesting they go for a hike. By trading their “prescription” for a free pass, patients …   more ›

Better Slow Down or Something Will Slow You Down

"Where's the fire? What's the hurry about? You'd better cool it off before you burn it out. You've got so much to do and only so many hours in the day." -Billy Joel

Has anyone ever told you that? I'm born and raised in the South, so I think it's a Southern saying that, "You better slow down or something's gonna slow you down." I'm always busy. I like being busy with worthwhile projects, but I often get overwhelmed. I often neglect my own health. I think, people are counting on me or after I finish this piece, I'll go work out. I'll go take a walk. After this, after that, let me just finish... After a long talk with Austell physical trainer and nutritionist Amia Freeman Wednesday, I realized that there are a lot of reasons why women eat the way we do. She is an expert in this area and will be posting pieces to help other South Cobb women get fit and understand why they sabotage their diets or find it …

Get Back On

I was falling off the wagon, but I'm back.

Forgive me, South Cobb. I promised I would regularly update you on my weight loss journey every Wednesday, and I promised myself that I would lose the toddler. Since my last column, I walked about a mile with Mableton Improvement Coalition; I visited the weekly salsa dancing lessons at Mexico Lindo; I took my dog, Noah on the Silver Comet Trail and got in about 3.5 miles. As I’ve gotten back in the groove after the New Year excitement, I’ve started hustling again to deliver news about South Cobb to you all and that means bouncing from interview to meeting to some place with wi-fi to get it all up on the site to home to eat and work a little more, where I usually fall asleep on the couch with my laptop. In fact, right now, I’m sitting in a …

It's easy to fall off the wagon. I have done it several times myself. I get crunked up about starting a new fitness regime, vowing to stay on it and then life happens. As we talked about yesterday on the Silver Comet, there has to be lifestyle changes incorporated throughout. I'll share mines. I started phasing out sodas in 2007 and opting to replace it with 100 percent juices and water. It …   more ›

I Got This

This challenge is about putting on my oxygen mask first.

This week, I was not as dilligent as I have been. It was my birthday, so I gave myself a few allowances, like cake and half a bacon cheeseburger from the Vortex and soda. However, on Sunday, I did hike/walk slowly/crawl Little Kennesaw Mountain. It was tons of fun! My overall weight loss has been three pounds over the last two weeks. This week, I'm going to kick it into high gear. I'm working out every day of the week. On Tuesday, I'll join in with the Mableton Improvement Walking Club at 6 p.m. and I will update this article with other local events so that you all can join me. As I mentioned last week, I am going to begin Weight Watchers. Last week, I wasn't sure, but because of what happened Wednesday, I'm convinced that it's the next …

Doing My Own Thing, I Guess

This week I tried a new Zumba class and kept up my healthy diet even though I was sick.

So, one week of this fitness challenge and lifestyle change under my belt, and I’ve lost a grand total of 4.2 pounds. Not bad, especially because from Friday until Tuesday, I was coughing and sneezing like an extra in “Contagion.” On Wednesday, I walked and jogged on the treadmill at my apartment complex for about 30 minutes. The heat was turned off completely, so I probably became sick from working out in the cold temperatures. On Thursday, I went to Lailah’s Studio at 4968 Austell Road in Austell and took a Zumba class taught by Katia Longaretti. Katia does not play. While in graduate school at the University of Alabama, I went to several Zumba classes. None of them were like the one I took last week. Katia is incredible. She has amazing…

Losing the Toddler in South Cobb

This year, we really are getting fit and healthy, South Cobb. Let's go!

I've been carrying around a 2-year-old boy with me every day for the last year or so. Well, he's grown into a 2-year-old boy. Yep, I've been lugging around an extra 25 pounds, the equivalent of a 2-year-old boy, and I fully intend to lose this toddler in South Cobb. For a gal who loves to rock a pair of heels as often as possible, I’ve certainly had to invest in flats now. So, I’ve made the same New Year’s resolutions I’ve been making for years: to lose weight, to eat healthier, to exercise regularly. This time, more is at stake. This time, it has to be a lifestyle change. This year is different. You all are going to be watching me, so I can’t let you down. So, let me explain quickly where this weight all came from because you may be in …
