Sky View Students and Staff Say Final Farewell

Sky View Elementary has closed its doors for a final time. Before they did, current and past students held a celebration to remember the school and its history.

The students of Sky View took past students, parents and staff through a journey of the decades to celebrate the school's history. The current students will attend the new Mableton Elementary School in the fall.

What a great way to honor the legacy of such a fine group of educators and the rich history of the SkyView Elementary School. It's a shame that such caring and passionate settings can't be preserved for the children's sake. It is a shame that nickels and numbers take precident over children and the need for a positive growth environment. As the song says, "When will we ever learn..."   more ›

Cobb BOE Unanimously Approves Redistricting Plan

As part of the decision, Mableton's Sky View Elementary School will close in Aug. 2012 and Smyrna's Brown Elementary School will close in Aug. 2013.

The Cobb County Board of Education unanimously approved the South Cobb redistricting of elementary schools at its regular board meeting on Thursday. The redistricting plan will close Sky View Elementary in Mableton and Brown Elementary in Smyrna. Students zoned for Sky View will now attend the new Mableton Elementary School, which is to be completed by Fall 2012. The school’s population will double in size. Brown students will attend a new Smyrna elementary school, which will open in fall 2013. Students from Fitzhugh Lee H.A.V.E.N. Academy will begin using the renovated Brown Elementary facility in January 2014. Also, under the plan, Austell Primary and Austell Intermediate Schools become traditional kindergarten through fifth grade …

I am sorry to say that the whole process regarding the closing of Skyview was a sham and a scam. No one at any level of the process, whether officials of the board or the district told the truth or lived up to what they said they would do to address parent's concerns. There was no concern for the quality of education or for the children that the district and schools serve. I have spoken with many…   more ›

Sky View Parents Fight for School, Seek Solutions for Smooth Merger

Parents are preparing in case their students lose their school and must attend Mableton Elementary.

Parents at Sky View Elementary, one of three schools proposed to close under both possible elementary school redistricting plans released by the Cobb County School District in October, are fighting for their school while keeping their options open. “Change is hard, especially for these kids. Some of them, all they know is change. Some consistency in their daily lives would be nice,” said Erin Stack, Sky View’s school council president and one of 193 parents and community members who signed an online petition to keep the school open. According to the two possible redistricting plans, Sky View would close and its students would attend the larger replacement Mableton Elementary, to be completed in August 2012. The new school would hold about …

I am a parent at Skyview and have parented and schooled eight children (and have also been a school teacher) in every type of school setting imaginable around this country and even overseas---charter, home-school, public, religious-private, etc-- and hands down Skyview is the best school and educational setting I have ever found. While there are facts and statistics to bolster my viewpoint there …   more ›
