The reason Vietnam veteran Fred McArthur of Mableton stood along Mableton Parkway on Thursday, American flag in hand, was simple and powerful. "Well, he gave his life. That's all, that's about all you can give," McArthur said, with glassy eyes and a quivering bottom lip. McArthur was talking about 21-year-old U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Scott Harper, who died on Sunday while serving in Afghanistan. McArthur's 22-year-old grandson is currently serving in the Army. Hundreds of others came out to fly their flags and salute the life of this local hero. Several Patch readers have submitted their photos and videos of the procession. You can view and submit your own here. Correction: The story originally had McArthur listed as Gary Jones, another …

The Cobb Diaper Day Committee, headed by Mableton’s Barbara Hickey, will hold its Third Annual Diaper Day on Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. in Glover Park on the Marietta Square. The community-wide collection of diapers will be given to Austell’s Community Aid Mission Partnership, the Center for Family Resources, MUST Ministries, Reconnecting Families, and the YWCA of Northwest Georgia. Businesses, concerned citizens and organizations are asked to collect diapers from employees, members and friends throughout the month of October. More than 120,000 diapers were donated to needy families in the last two years of this effort. "Raising a family today is difficult enough without the added burden of wondering where the necessities of life will come from," …
Each week, we feature a Whiz Kid. This week, meet our Whiz Principal!
Every Wednesday, South Cobb Patch features a Whiz Kid, a young person who has accomplished something great or is doing something incredible in our community. However, this week, we salute not a Whiz Kid, but a Whiz Principal. Kym Eisgruber, principal of Mableton Elementary, allowed students and community members to duct tape her to a wall as a fundraiser at the school’s annual fall festival, which was held on Friday evening. Lookin’ good in that leopard duct tape, Mrs. Eisgruber! Nominate your Whiz Kid for our weekly feature. Click here to learn how!

Plenty of students, parents and community volunteers took part in the elementary school's annual fall event on Friday.
Children bounced, ran through bubbles and devoured sno-cones and cotton candy at Mableton Elementary's annual Fall Festival. The event raises money for the school, and participants could even purchase duct tape to tape their principal, Kym Eisgruber to the wall for fun. Check out the photos here. Cobb officers nab suspects who broke into Mableton bike shop late Sunday night.
After responding to an alarm from Advanced Cycles on Mableton Parkway, Cobb police officers were able to nab would-be thieves on Sunday night. According to Cobb police, six officers arrived at the business and once the suspects tried to flee through the back of the business, they were apprehended by two of the officers and taken into custody. They were transported to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center and charged with burglary. South Cobb Patch will have more details about this incident as they become available.
Rev. Lionel Gantt wrote this letter to the editor expressing his views and an urgency to help stop the violence in South Cobb.
Accountability is our first and far most concern in our fight to stop the violence, and we have taken great steps in counter-acting this effect. On Aug. 13, at the same time we were hosting a Stop the Violence Press Conference at Trinity Church, other community organizers were hosting an event at Marietta Housing Authority Housing Projects, in which over 500 people gathered in a fun-filled event, with no police actions, outbreaks of crimes or violent acting out of any kind. The organizers of this event did an outstanding job. I was there at this event, and I was the organizer of the press conference to Stop the Violence. These positive actions do not get big press, but every time a black youth, operating on his own, not representing the …

Let's face it, having cancer is no fun. Now there is a movie that offers up a cure, of sorts—one that many say is the best medicine.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Adam, a 27-year-old man who has his whole life ahead of him until he discovers he has a rare form of cancer and only a 50/50 chance of survival. The people in Adam's life react differently to the news. His girlfriend, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, pledges to stand by him, then dumps him. His mother, Anjelica Huston, goes into smothering mode and his best friend, Kyle, played by Seth Rogen, tries to keep his spirits up by turning his life into a non-stop party. Rogen co-produces "50/50," a movie based loosely in part on the life of Rogen's good friend Will Reiser. Reiser, a screenwriter, beat cancer a few years back. "50/50" is a comedy, but it is never disrespectful. The fact of the matter is we are all dying…

The Cobb County School Board will vote tonight on whether to renew the charter of Imagine International Academy of Mableton.
If the approximately 250 people that attended a recent town hall-style meeting were any indication, the Cobb County Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m. tonight could feature a spirited discussion. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa’s recommendation to the School Board is not to renew Imagine International Academy of Mableton's charter request to extend its charter two more years instead of the usual five years. “I think there will be quite a few people there,” said School Board member David Morgan, who held the town hall meeting Sept. 15. “They will be making the case to have the renewal petition move forward. What I’ve tried to do the whole time is be very clear why I have the position that I have and to reinforce and back up my position …
