GALEO in partnership with the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Georgia-Alabama Chapter, and the Latin American Association, held a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Application Assistance Day on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Latin American Association located at 2750 Buford Highway in Atlanta. The goal of DACA Application Assistance Day is to help 300 DACA eligible individuals. The DACA Application Assistance Day is being supported by over 100 volunteers that include immigration attorneys, attorneys, paralegals, and community members. Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO, released this statement regarding the 11th U.S. Circuit of Appeals federal court ruling on HB87: "The ruling against HB87 is a big win for our communities now, and opens the door for future litigation to stop the 'show me your papers' racial profiling provisions in the law. We will not tolerate racial profiling in our state and will work with civil rights groups and the U.S. Department of Justice closely to monitor police activity all across the state with the help of community members. The Cobb United for Change Coalition plans to meet monthly to develop an action plan to change the community for the better.
About 15 members of various community organizations gathered on Thursday night at Trinity Baptist Church in Mableton to discuss issues they plan to address and help solve throughout the county. The group, Cobb United for Change Coalition, plans to meet on a monthly or bimonthly basis and establish an action plan to bring about changes they wish to see. A panelist of five community members answered questions about immigration, racial profiling, education, jobs and prison industrial complex during the two-hour session. Rev.
