Flood Watch In Effect Through Wednesday Morning

Meteorologists say the rain might not leave South Cobb until Friday.

South Cobb could continue to see rain through most of Thursday, but today’s showers and the short-term forecast have led weather experts to issue a flood watch for north Georgia through the first part of Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch that will be in effect until Wednesday morning. Meteorologists say the widespread showers with periods of heavy rain are expected to occur during the watch. Rains have already made the area’s soil wet, which will help in producing runoff as the wet weather continues. The weather service says minor flooding in smaller creeks, streams and low-lying flood-prone areas are possible. Officials say a flood watch means there is the potential for flood based on the current forecasts. …

Austell Seeks Demolition Proposals for Flood-Damaged Homes

The city is seeking asbestos removal and structure demolition proposals for the 19 flood-damaged homes the city purchased as part of a flood mitigation project.

The City of Austell is one step closer to demolishing the homes that were destroyed and then acquired by the city as part of a buyout program, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazardous Mitigation Grant Program, which cost the city $2.9 million. They are extending a request for proposals to inspect and remove asbestos from 19 homes purchased by the city. This removal process must be done before demolishing the homes. On Thursday, the city will hold its pre-request for proposal conference from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in suite 107 of the Threadmill Complex. The conference will be held in two sessions, the first one for asbestos abatement contractors and the second for structure demolition contractors. Interested parties can pick up the RFP…
