Top Teachers in Cobb Schools Honored

Hundreds of students, staff members and community supporters cheered the educators on Tuesday at a special ceremony.

From the CobbCast News Blog Teachers of the Year from every public school and postsecondary institution in Cobb were honored this past week during the 24th annual Give Our Schools A Hand pep rally. The day began with a special breakfast for the teachers, provided by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Teachers then entered the Roswell Street Baptist Church auditorium to find hundreds of students, fellow staff members and community supporters cheering them on. Each Teacher of the Year was individually honored and awarded a commemorative plaque by Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa. The Ed Voyles Automotive Group also awarded a one-year lease on a new car to each of the district-level winners, Dr. Rick Kaht, Carolyn Davis, Beth Morgan and …

Another SPLOST Discussion Coming for Cobb School Board

The revised project list is the topic for Monday's special called meeting.

The Cobb Board of Education has called a special meeting for next week to discuss the proposed SPLOST IV construction and maintenance project list. The meeting is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Monday in the board room of the Cobb County School District central office, 514 Glover St., Marietta. The board met last week to go over a revised "notebook" (see attached PDF) totalling $717 million in proposed projects that Cobb may be voting on early next year. At the end of that meeting, board member Alison Bartlett asked for another meeting to continue finalizing the project list. The board is expected to vote later this month on whether to call for a referendum, which is likely for March 2013. Among the major revisions is a $3 million …

Cobb School Calendar Vote Scheduled

A member of a special calendar committee is upset with Superintendent Hinojosa's recommendation for the 2013-14 school year.

Several proposed calendars for the 2013-14 academic year will likely be up for discussion when the Cobb Board of Education holds its October business meeting Thursday. A vote is scheduled on adopting a calendar, but the measure became more complicated at the board's work session earlier this month because of multiple proposals that were submitted. The 7 p.m. meeting Thursday is in the board room of the Cobb County School District central office, 514 Glover Street, Marietta. An executive session is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nine different proposals for next year's school calendar have been floated for possible action. They include a recommendation from Superintendent Michael Hinojosa, as well as proposals from board members Alison Bartlett and …

School Calendar Committee Reaches Agreement

The panel has hammered out a calendar for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years.

The 21-member group charged with creating a school calendar for the next two school years has reached an agreement on the divisive issue and produced calendars for the next two school years. According to the Marietta Daily Journal, the 2013-14 school year would start on Aug. 1, with a fall break in late September. An additional winter break would be held between Feb. 14-17.  The next task of the group is to narrow their two calendars down to one in order to present it to School Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa. Hinojosa expects the Cobb County School Board to vote on the new calendar some time in October.

Principal Openings On Cobb Board Agenda

Two elementary schools are without principals as the school year is underway.

Filling two principal openings at elementary schools in West Cobb and approving grants and construction change orders at three South Cobb schools are among the agenda items at the Cobb Board of Education meeting Thursday night.  The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Cobb County School District headquarters at 514 Glover Street in Marietta. A public comment period will take place near the start of the meeting. Vaughan Elementary School in Powder Springs has been without a principal since June, when Dr. Barbara Swinney was named area assistant superintendent for leadership and learning for the district.  Dowell Elementary School, located on West Sandtown Road, is also without a principal after the recent resignation of Janis Komara, who had …

Back to School Road Safety Reminders

Cobb Police have provided the following tips for motorists and students as a new school year approaches.

Use these safety tips from the Cobb County Police to start off a new school year: Take time and be patient Although the summer season is far from over, summer vacation for most metro Atlanta area students is coming to an end. And as we all know, the school year comes with a substantial increase in morning traffic. Please allow an extra 10 or 15 minutes for their morning commute. The extra time will not only reduce stress but help keep our roads safer. Drivers are less likely to speed or engage in other dangerous driving habits when they aren’t running late. School bus stop-arm enforcement beefed up One of the most dangerous traffic law violations a driver can commit is to pass a school bus that has stopped to load or unload children. In an…

Cobb Schools SPLOST Plan Taking Shape

The Cobb Board of Education will conduct public hearings this fall to determine whether to call for a referendum in early 2013.

The current Cobb County School District SPLOST collection period is ending at the end of 2013, but plenty of construction and renovation needs remain.  That's why the Cobb Board of Education recently hired an educational consultant to craft a politically salable package of projects that could go to Cobb voters early next year.  On Wednesday the school board heard a progress report from James Wilson, a former Cobb school administrator and retired Fulton County school superintendent, whose Marietta firm, Education Planners, was paid $75,000 to put a proposal together.  The proposed collection period from Jan. 1, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2018 is being called "SPLOST IV" after the three special purpose local options sales taxes that have preceeded it…

After 50 Years, a New Clarkdale Floods with Hope

After 50 years and despite a flood that destroyed the school building, the community of Clarkdale Elementary stood together in unity.

Like a phoenix from the ashes, the students, teachers and parents at Clarkdale Elementary are like their own four pet turtles that survived a flood. Not just any flood, but a flood that only comes around every 100 years or so. The family of Clarkdale Elementary survived the floods of 2009, survived being divided amongst two schools and survived even a few frightening weeks when they weren’t sure they would have a school ever again. But on Saturday at the campus of their new school, those who are a part of this school community, or ever had been, celebrated Clarkdale's 50-year legacy. Principal Marjorie Bickerstaff cut the red ribbon and opened the doors and the only thing that came rushing in was not floodwaters, but a sea of people with …

What a blessing! I was so overwhelmed with joy to see,and not only to see, but to be apart of history. My son attended the old Clarkdale, what an amazing structure. When I first stepped onto this new school, I thought I was actually visiting a college campus. "Really!". I am so proud of the principal, staff, teachers, and most of all the parents and of course without the students there would be …   more ›
