Dittos to what Rev Gantt said...it was truly an inspiring and moving homegoing ceremony for Rev Graves and a fitting call to action for all of us to follow in his footsteps and those of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (whose nephew, Mr. Farris, the new President of the SCLC, eloquently recounted the words of his uncle at the funeral service today).   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Remembering Rev. Dwight Graves

One man remembers a local leader and friend, Rev. Dwight Graves.

We give thanks for Reverend Dwight Graves, our Civil Rights leader. In this season, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We also reflect on the history of the Civil Rights Movement in America. There were many great leaders from all walks of life. We take this time to reflect on our own leader in Cobb County SCLC, Rev Dwight Graves. Through him we shared the dream and in us “The Dream Lives On,” which is the theme of this year's Cobb SCLC King celebration events. We thank God for sending us a leader like Rev. Graves. He possessed family values, was a good husband and father, had a good work history from the military and U.S. Postal Service; he was a Civil Rights leader on many levels. He led us in the cases which …

I loved Pastor Graves, he was the father I never had, the brother I'd love to keep and a friend I always treasured. His smile was unbelievable...it was a smile that lit up the room. He was truly a wonderful, loving and caring human being. I will miss his advice...that smile...that chuckle... his prayers . I can't believe he is gone. I am very sad, but you know, I just know he is smiling in heaven…   more ›

Cobb SCLC Stop the Violence Movement

Rev. Lionel Gantt wrote this letter to the editor expressing his views and an urgency to help stop the violence in South Cobb.

Accountability is our first and far most concern in our fight to stop the violence, and we have taken great steps in counter-acting this effect. On Aug. 13, at the same time we were hosting a Stop the Violence Press Conference at Trinity Church, other community organizers were hosting an event at Marietta Housing Authority Housing Projects, in which over 500 people gathered in a fun-filled event, with no police actions, outbreaks of crimes or violent acting out of any kind. The organizers of this event did an outstanding job. I was there at this event, and I was the organizer of the press conference to Stop the Violence. These positive actions do not get big press, but every time a black youth, operating on his own, not representing the …

The event will take place at Trinity Tabernacle Baptist Church at 592 Veterans Memorial Highway S.E. in Mableton from 2-3 p.m. The purpose of the event is to provide a forum for community leaders and members to connect and learn about resources in the Mableton community to help make the area safer. Rev. Lionel Gantt, who organized the event, wrote in a recent email that Mableton is making headlines for robberies and violent crimes. “So it is here in Mableton, that we wish to start our Stop the Violence and Incarceration Press Conference asking our citizens to come together as a community of people again…
