South Cobb Road Work Updates, May 20-24

Check out the latest updates on road constructions, delays and detours around South Cobb and other parts of the county.

Here are the latest updates on road work being done around Smyrna-Vinings and Cobb County, according to the Cobb Department of Transportation. Beginning May 28, Cobb SOT staff is scheduled to begin work replacing the existing, substandard, weight-restricted bridge on Hopkins Road over Wildhorse Creek. In addition, pedestrian accommodations will be enhanced with the extension of the sidewalk on the west side to connect to the Silver Comet Trail.  Hopkins Road will be closed at the bridge for approximately two months once work begins. Signed detour routes will be provided during construction. This is a joint project between the City of Powder Springs and Cobb County. Here are the latest updates on road work being done around Cobb County, according to the Cobb Department of Transportation. Clay Road to Hicks Road: Expect periodic lane closures 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one lane remaining open. Pedestrian Access: Temporary sidewalks are in place are to assist pedestrians while crews install new sidewalks along the east side of Floyd Road. Starting in May, Cobb DOT will start replacing the bridge over Sope Creek on Paper Mill Road. New Left-Turn Signal at East-West Connector

Be prepared to see a new flashing yellow left-turn signal at the intersection of East-West Connector and Cooper Lake Road.

In the coming days, you will see a newly installed flashing yellow left-turn signal at the intersection of East-West Connector and Cooper Lake Road. The yellow arrow over the left-turn lane is part of a new signal display system that indicates to drivers more clearly when they must yield to make a left turn across traffic. Cobb County officials say the new signal system has proven to help prevent crashes, move more traffic through an intersection and provide additional traffic management flexibility. According to a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) research, motorists understood more clearly when to yield before turning left when presented with the flashing yellow arrow as opposed to the traditional solid green light.
