Birrell: Residents Pleased with Roundabout

The roundabout at Holly Springs and Davis roads was completed this summer.

Although East Cobb residents weren't sure what to think about a roundabout being installed at the intersection of Holly Springs and Davis roads, District 3 Commissioner Joann Birrell said during Tuesday night's Board of Commissioner's meeting that she has heard nothing but positive feedback since the project has been finished. "Not everyone was sure about it when we started," Birrell said. "It's been a great improvement." The Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a final change order for the project with a savings to Cobb County of $47,577.68, which was due to variations between the original and final plan quantities, including an overrun in construction allowance. The project was an intersection safety and operational improvement …

Byrne: 'Hell No' to Raising Taxes

The former Cobb commission chairman and challenger vowed at Tuesday's candidates forum never to be like "a damn Democrat” to expand Cobb government services.

The controversial TSPLOST took center stage during Tuesday night’s Cobb County Commissioner Chairman forum. All three challengers opposed the special purpose local option sales tax aimed at funding transportation projects in metro Atlanta. “I’m running to do everything I can to defeat TSPLOST,” said Bill Byrne to applause from the audience. Mike Boyce cited the TSPLOST as one of the four taxes imposed over the last 19 months by the current commissioners. “I’m running to bring conservative government to Cobb County,” Boyce said. “Four new taxes in 19 months, that’s not a Republican. That’s not conservative.” Incumbent Tim Lee listed off the numerous accomplishments during his tenure as the current chairman. “Cobb County has the lowest …

Several positions will be eliminated and others will be promoted in a move to improve efficiency.

Cobb County's Support Services Agency is getting an overhaul to increase operational flexibility and to keep the agency up to date with current technological standards. Support Services Agency Director Virgil Moon gave a presentation during the Cobb County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday morning outlining the proposed changes. Thompson Seeks Return to Cobb Commission for Redevelopment

Incumbent South Cobb District 4 Commissioner Woody Thompson is asking voters to approve him a fourth time so he can work on redevelopment and renewal in places that are "looking tired."

Incumbent South Cobb District 4 Commissioner Woody Thompson is asking voters to approve him a fourth time so he can work on redevelopment and renewal in places that are "looking tired." "I grew up in this area," said Thompson, of Mableton.  "I've seen a lot of growth and I've seen some deterioration. Some places that are showing some age need some renewal." For 40 years, Thompson has been a real estate broker, selling mostly land and commercial property. Several areas in South Cobb need some new buildings and different regulations so that commercial clients will move in, he said. "Around Six Flags Drive there are some nice subdivisions, but we've got to clean up Six Flags Drive itself," he said. Thompson thinks the county should look at …

Citizens Committee's Cuts Upset Residents

The commissioners held the only public hearing on the proposed 2012 budget Tuesday afternoon.

Cobb County's proposed fiscal 2012 budget doesn't include any furlough days for the county's 4,200 employees, or any layoffs. But it does include some fee increases and service reductions, plus other cost-saving measures. We are live at the public hearing on the budget, where a crowd is gathering. Library hours have been cut as well as hours at the aquatic center. In personnel, 66 unfilled positions will be eliminated. The county is also looking to privatize the Cobblestone Golf Course. Cobb County's proposed general fund budget for fiscal 2012, which starts Oct. 1, is expected to be about $4 million more than the current $317 million budget that was revised in April. However, the $321.7 million proposal is $6.3 million less than the $328 …
