Three Men Pose as Police, Attempt to Break into Home

The perpetrators were wearing masks and dark clothing with vests displaying “POLICE” on the back. One of the men was armed with a shotgun.

Cobb County Police are investigating an attempted home invasion, which occurred at a residence on Chisholm Trail in Marietta Wednesday. The home is in South Cobb's precinct 2. A male resident heard the perpetrators banging at the back door and telling him to let them in because they were the police. The resident refused, and the perpetrators attempted to gain entry into the house by forcing the locked door open. The man gathered his family into another room and immediately called 9-1-1. The perpetrators fled in an unknown direction without gaining entry. They were described as three black men, about 6-foot with a thin build. Police Conclude Investigation of Fatal Austell Crash

Originally, Cobb police investigators found 42-year-old Adriane Coleman to have caused the accident. However, their investigation led them to determine 64-year-old Coleman caused the accident.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, Cobb police recently determined a fatal crash was not caused by the victim, Adriane Coleman, crossing the center line as originally thought. According to police, the crash occured around 2:30 p.m. on April 9 when the 2010 Nissan Versa driven by 64-year-old Sylvia Coleman of Powder Springs crossed the center line and collided with a 1994 Dodge Spirit. Sylvia Coleman was traveling southbound on Austell-Powder Springs and 42-year-old Adriane Coleman of Austell, the driver of the Spirit, was heading north on the road. Adriane Coleman died from her injuries, while Sylvia Coleman was taken by ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The two women are not related. "I keep …

Motorcyclist Dies After Crash in Mableton

The motorcyclist was hit by a car making a U-turn and ejected from the vehicle onto the roadway.

A Douglasville man died in a Mableton vehicle crash on Wednesday morning as he was driving his motorcycle eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway. According to Cobb police investigators, 40-year-old Amanda Garrett of Austell was also driving her 2001 Oldsmobile Bravada eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway at the same time. As Garrett approached the cross street of Powell Drive, she made a U-turn into the path of Vernon Patterson's black 1979 Harley Davidson FLH. The Harley collided with the left front of the Oldsmobile. As a result of the collision, Patterson was ejected onto the northern edge of the roadway. Patterson was transported by ground to Wellstar Cobb Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Anyone with information which may …

Mableton Student Arrested for Sexting

The 17-year-old from Mableton was arrested after Smyrna police say he texted lewd photos to three juvenile girls.

A 17-year-old from Mableton has been arrested and charged with obscene material, a misdemeanor, after Smyrna police say he texted lewd photos to three juvenile girls, WSB reported. The student, who attends a Smyrna high school, was released from the Cobb County Adult Detention Center the day after his arrest on $5,000 bond. Neither a representative from the Smyrna Police Department nor Cobb County School District could be reached for further comment at this posting.

UPDATE: Murdocks File Lawsuit

The Cobb Department of Public Safety's Internal Affairs division determined the officer acted justly and in self-defense when he shot and killed Matt Murdock during a traffic stop in Mableton in May 2011.

UPDATE: Alex Kaufman, attorney representing the Murdocks, has notified South Cobb Patch that the family has filed their lawsuit on Friday in the Northern District of Georgia. South Cobb Patch will continue to update this story as details are made available. The parents of the man who was shot by a Cobb police officer in May 2011 during a traffic stop in Mableton plan to file a lawsuit against the county police department this week. On May 19, 2011, Matt Murdock of Cumming was shot and killed after he was stopped by a Cobb police officer as he left a Mableton business parking lot. Cobb Police Search for 2 Suspects Who Robbed Burger King and Wells Fargo

UPDATE at 7:30 p.m. Cobb Police are searching for a suspect who attempted to rob the Wells Fargo bank at 5010 Floyd Road on Friday at 10:31 a.m. Police said a man walked into the bank sucking a lollipop and handed a teller a note, which stated that he had a gun. He then demanded and received an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing on foot. Pierce said the suspect was last seen headed towards Joseph Club Drive. He is described as an African-American man, 5’9,” about 180 pounds. Cobb Counterfeit Ring Sent to Prison

An operation based out of a Smyrna laundry sold identification to illegal immigrants.

Four members of a counterfeit document ring based in Smyrna were sentenced to federal prison Wednesday on charges of conspiring to produce fraudulent documents. Ruben Osorno Altamirano, 31, Jose Luis Israel Legoretta Castillo, 31, Juana Hernandez Fonseca, 40, and Jose Molina Vasquez, 33, received sentences ranging from 10 months to two years in prison, plus two years' supervised release. All are from Mexico. U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in a news release that the men ran a counterfeit identification operation out of a Smyrna laundry. They sold fake Social Security cards, permanent resident cards and other forms of identification. “These defendants ran an operation that enabled many illegal aliens to get their hands on …

UPDATE: VMH from Discovery to River View Now Reopened

A car crashed into a utility pole, knocking it and wires into the roadway of Veterans Memorial Highway. The road, from Discovery Boulevard to River View Road, will be closed in both directions for the next six to eight hours.

Update 8:55 p.m. on May 2: Veterans Memorial Highway is now reopened. A car crashed into a utility pole on Veterans Memorial Highway from Discovery Boulevard to River View Road in Mableton. That portion of Veterans Memorial Highway has been closed in both directions. The crash knocked the pole and wires into the roadway, and Georgia Power is on the scene, said Officer Mike Bowman, spokesman for the Cobb Police Department. The electricity company reported that it would be about six to eight hours before it could replace the pole and repair the down wires. Until then, the roads in the area will be closed. Lunch Break: How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?

Maybe there's something more to the actions of the people around you, but you haven't taken the time to find out what it is.

On Monday, I was at the scene of a shooting. The police hadn’t confirmed it, but all the neighbors and family members of the man who had been shot said the man, 41-year-old Ricardo Reese, was dead. One woman said his first child just turned 1 three weeks ago. As the afternoon dragged on, more and more people came outside of their homes just standing around, some curious, others concerned and a few were grieving. Even more gathered as people came home from work and children were dropped off by their school buses. A group of four young men, who looked to be about 18 or 19, told me they wanted to be on the news because they were a rap group and wanted to get discovered and signed to a label. UPDATE: Police ID Suspect and Victim of Mableton Shooting

Both the suspect and victim are from Atlanta.

Cobb police have identified the man who was shot to death in a unit at Mableton Reserve townhomes, 6850 Mableton Parkway, as 41-year-old Ricardo Reese of Atlanta. Police have charged 18-year-old Darius Dionne Oliver of Atlanta with his death. Oliver is currently being held in Cobb County jail without bond on charges of murder, aggravated assault, burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Cobb police at (770) 499-3945. Information can be given anonymously.
