The Weekender: Ice Cream Social, Big Bang Ball and 80s Prom Night

There are tons of festivals, balls, socials and even an 80s Prom Night in and around South Cobb this weekend.

What: Take a staycation to Summerville, GA, for the annual hot air balloon festival, which includes tons of hot air balloons, carnival rides, arts and crafts, great food and live entertainment.

When: Friday, 3-9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 7 p.m.

Where: Chattooga High School at 989 Highway 114, Summerville, GA 30747

Cost: $5 per adult, $3 for children. All proceeds benefit the Chattooga High athletic department

What: A speghetti supper at Concord Baptist Church to benefit the church's nursery monitors. To-go plates are available, and you won't have to cook dinner tonight!

When: 6 p.m.

Where: Concord Baptist Churchat 4494 Floyd Road in Mableton

Saturday

What: It's the second to last Saturday of the Market at Riverview Landing. Come to Riverview Landing where you can buy plants and seedlings from Garden*Hood and local, organic produce grown and harvested on-site by Fresh Roots Farm.  There will also be gardening demonstrations every Saturday, so you can leave with a better understanding of how to care for your plants.

The five-acre off leash dog pasture will be open for your dogs run free and play in the Chattahoochee River.  The children's sand pit will also be open, and each week there will be a food truck on site so you can picnic along the river. This week, there will also be paddleboats, a dog groomer and a professional to take dog portraits!

When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Cost: Free, must pay for items at market

What: This festival features handcrafted, animal-related art and is hosted to raise awareness of the many homeless animals in Cobb County and to encourage the public to visit the shelter.

When: 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Where: Cobb County Animal Shelter at 1060 Al Bishop Drive SW in Marietta

Cost: Free

Slow Food Atlanta 6th Annual Ice Cream Social

What: Come taste some of the best homemade ice cream and sorbet created by renowned local chefs and ambitious amateurs. Sweet corn ice cream with candied lemon zest and blueberry compote was a favorite flavor last year.

When: 12:30-2 p.m.

Where: The event is held in conjunction with the Peachtree Road Farmers Market and will be held in the garden of the Cathedral of St. Philip (behind the lot where the market is held) at 2744 Peachtree Road in Atlanta.

Cost: Purchase tickets online in advance. $15 for adults, $5 ages 5 -10, children under 5 are free. Proceeds benefit the Atlanta Chapter of Slow Food International and the Peachtree Road Farmers Market.

Big Bang Ball (A Modern Dustbowl Carnival)

What: A fun music and arts festival featuring artists like SCAA Candlelite Summer Concert Series favorite Blair Crimmins and the Hookers, along with many others. There will also be carnival games, fortune-telling and food trucks.

When: 5 p.m.-1 a.m.

Where: The Goat Farm Atlanta,

Cost: $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Kids 15 and under are free.

 

What: Atkins Park Tavern in Smyrna will turn back time to the 1980s starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, June 22.  During the “Back to the ‘80s Prom Night,” the restaurant will host a costume contest with prizes for the best 80s look and will crown the Prom King and Queen.  DJ H. will keep the party going until 4 a.m.
