South Cobb High Tops Marietta High in Season Opener

The 2011-12 high school football opening game for the South Cobb High School (SCHS) Eagles was an all too familiar opponent, the Marietta High School (MHS) Blue Devils. The teams squared off at Marietta's Northcutt Stadium on Friday.

MHS was coming off of a dismal 2010-11 season, in which they amassed only two wins and were looking to kick off this season breaking the five-game losing streak from last year. SCHS was coming off of a 7-4 season, which earned them a trip to the playoffs, but one of those four losses came at the hands of MHS. There was definitely something to prove on each side.

The first three quarters were plagued by lackluster defense which yielded several big plays on each side. The result of which left the matchup tied at 26-26 at the start of the 4th quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the fans were treated to significantly improved defense and some major hits being delivered. The game remained tied until the 1:19 mark (remaining) when SCHS marched down the field, after getting good field position from a poor punt and punched in a 10-yard run. They took a 33-26 lead after the successful extra point attempt and never relinquished the lead.

MHS got the ball back and with the help of a big yardage gain, due to a timely quarterback keep, and penalties by the SCHS defense. Unfortunately, penalties of their own pushed them in the wrong direction. One of which, an illegal procedure call, negated a touchdown pass. They were never able to punch it in again.
