SCHS Boys Basketball Team Has New Coach, New Theme

New South Cobb High varsity boys' basketball coach Greg Moultrie says the team is going to be a defensive powerhouse.

The basketball team at is ready for all the changes this new season, which begins Thursday, is bound to bring. With a new boys’ basketball coach and a new theme for the year, “Hard Work Pays Off,” the boys are ready to go all the way to the state playoffs.

Coach Greg Moultrie said he has set expectations for the team “very high” and is focused on improving the team’s “defensive intensity.”

Moultrie first began coaching in 1998, and he spent the last two years at Calloway High School in LaGrange, GA.

In 2010, Moultrie’s team won the 2010 regional championship and advanced to the Elite 8, finishing with a 20-8 record.

He was named 5AA Region Coach of the Year. He said he took the coaching job at South Cobb High for the shorter commute to and from his home in Fairburn.

His players work hard in daily two-hour practices.

Playing upon their season’s theme, Moultrie stresses to the team members, “Practice is hard work, so the game will be a walk in the park.”

The team is striving to improve its defensive game, Moultrie explained.

“When other teams see South Cobb on the schedule, I want them to say that team is tenacious on their defense,” Moultrie said.

In addition to a tenacity on the court, Moultrie said he is placing “a strong focus on academics,” so that the players are “role models inside the school as well as in the community.”

Currently, the team has seven senior leaders:

“I think we should be a surprise team this year.”
