Whitefield Celebrates State Championship

While the private school's team took home their third championship in the last 12 years, the South Cobb Eagles also made it into the state playoffs this season.

Whitefield Academy will be celebrating today.

This year, the school's boys basketball team in the school's history. A celebration rally will be held at the school today at 2:05 p.m.

"It is no secret that we push and challenge our players, I am proud of them for stepping up and demonstrating grit and valor; values that are at the core of our program," Coach Tyrone Johnson said this week.

Whitefield competed seven times in the last 12 years, and also won the state title in 2003 and 2009.

Whitefield Academy wasn't the only local school to make the playoffs this year. The South Cobb Eagles beat Jenkins in the first round of the state playoffs but fell to the M.L. King Lions 77-61 in the second round. In that game, the Eagles' Devocio Butler scored 19 points and led a rally in the second quarter, narrowing the Lions' lead to 52-43. The Lions scored four points in the third quarter and kept their lead through the rest of the game.

"The kids never stopped believing in what I'm trying to accomplish in the system," Coach Gregory Moultrie told the Marietta Daily Journal. "Even when we had that seven-game losing streak and everyone wrote us off, we had to continue playing together and play hard. This season is a marathon. We're clicking at the right time."
