Whitefield Advances to Third-Straight Final Four
Wolfpack start slow; dominate late and destroys North Cobb Christian 86-59.
Whitefield Academy blows out North Cobb Christian in its top-eight match-up, 86-59. The Wolfpack started off sluggish, but dominated the last three quarters behind the play of seniors, Tekele Cotton and Kennard Backman.
When Whitefield's leading scorer, junior shooting guard Kenneth Gaines, got into early foul trouble, Cotton and Backman stepped up and showed their veteran leadership. Cotton, who finished with 24 points, attacked the teeth of the Eagles' defense, finishing strong at the rim. Backman scored 23 points and owned the paint with his low post scoring and tough rebounding. The Wolfpack's depth proved to be too much for North Cobb Christian to handle.
Coach Tyrone Johnson looks to lead Whitefield to their second title in three years. Whitefield plays Terrell County in the 2010-11 GHSA Class A semifinals Wednesday, March 9, at 8:30 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex.
