Top Honors for Whitefield Students

Students win academic and chess titles; meanwhile Campbell names its Spartans of the Week.

Whitefield Academy’s academic team won first place in the Fall Georgia Academic Team Association (GATA) quizbowl tournament at Chattahoochee High School last Sunday. Whitefield competed against 48 other teams from public and private high schools across Georgia in the quizbowl tournament.   

Quizbowl is an academic competition with questions ranging over the entire spectrum of high school subjects as well as a number of questions on current events, sports, and popular culture.

Members of the Whitefield academic team are Harrison Bradley of Atlanta, Cole Enright of Mableton, James Lovas of Smyrna, Matt Segars of Atlanta, and Lexi Turner of Marietta.

In other Whitefield news, fielding competition in every elementary grade with the exception of first, eleven members of the Whitefield Academy chess team competed on last Saturday at the Georgia Grade Level Chess Tournament at .

Kindergartner Drew Justice brought home the state title, winning four games out of five.  After losing in round four, Drew came back strong in the final round, taking the first place trophy on tie-breaks over two other kindergartners. 

Second grader Zoe Justice and fifth grader Zachary Justice also won four out of five. Both Zoe and Zachary lost to the eventual first place finishers in their respective sections, with Zoe taking third place for the second year in a row, and Zachary placing seventh on tie-breaks. 

Newcomer Everett Sinclair had a strong showing in the fourth grade section, ending the day with three points out of five. Fifth grader Caleb Corliss also ended the day with three out of five, while classmates Connor Miller, Kameron Hughes, and Laura Scheidegger finished the day with two wins each. Also representing Whitefield were fourth grader Hannah Chang, third grader Lauren Miller, and second grader Luke Sinclair.
