Large scoring swings frequent in South Cobb CRCT results

Sanders Elementary fourth graders better their math score by 22.4 percent on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests.

Fifth graders at significantly raised their scores in each of the five content areas on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, the Georgia Department of Education released Wednesday.

Social studies scores for the fifth graders at Sky View improved by a whopping 25.1 percent to 72.7 percent, meeting or exceeding the standard. The grade's science scores jumped 21.5 percent to 80 percent.

In reading, the Sky View fifth graders' scores increased 15.6 percent to 98.1 percent, meeting or exceeding the standard. The average score increased 10.3 percent in English/language arts and in math scores improved by 3.7 percent to 85.2 percent.

Scores throughout the South Cobb Patch coverage area experienced large increases and decreases on the CRCT, which measures third- to eighth-grade students’ abilities in reading, English/language arts, math, science and social studies.

Students in third-, fifth- and eighth-grade must meet or exceed the grade requirements on the CRCT in reading to advance according to state law. Fifth- and eighth-grade students also need to meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in mathematics to move on to the next grade.

Third Grade

third graders improved their English/language arts score by 7 percent to 80.7 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. third-grade class raised its math scores 3.6 percent to 70 percent, but dropped its average social studies score by 11.9 percent to 61.1 percent.

Fourth Grade

Sanders fourth graders bettered their math score by 22.4 percent from last year to 76.8 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. Sky View fourth graders raised their science score by 14.5 percent to 81.7 percent meeting or exceeding the standard, but their math score fell 13.8 percent to 69 percent.

Fifth Grade

fifth graders posted large improvements in their science and math scores. The class raised its average science score by 16.7 percent to 71.3 percent meeting or exceeding the standard and its math score by 13.9 percent to 96.3 percent. ’s fifth graders improved their math score by 14.6 percent to 91.5 percent meeting or exceeding the standard.

Sanders fifth graders saw their social studies scores plummet 22.3 percent from 58.7 percent meeting or exceeding the standard in 2010 to 36.4 percent this year. The class’ average score in science fell 14.8 percent to 49.2 percent.

Sixth Grade

’s sixth graders boosted their social studies scores by 16.7 percent to 77.6 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. They also raised their average science score 10.1 percent to 72.1 percent. Cooper’s sixth-grade class improved its social studies score 12.9 percent to 59.5 percent.

Seventh Grade

Seventh graders at Floyd raised their math scores by 14.4 percent to 86.6 percent meeting or exceeding the standard.

Eighth Grade

’s eighth graders improved their average math score by 17.8 percent to 70 percent. students bettered their scores by 9.8 percent in science to 64.9 percent and improved their math scores by 8.1 percent in science. students boosted their average science scores by 9.2 percent to 47.8 percent.
