Hundreds Reunited to Bid Farewell to Mableton Elementary School

The Mableton Elementary School building will soon be demolished as the new replacement building is being completed for the upcoming school year.

Mableton Elementary's own legendary hero, Coach Allen, summed up Remember Mableton School Day in one word, "bittersweet."

Hundreds of former students, parents, teachers and staff members descended upon the 50-plus year-old school to say hello again to each other and goodbye to the school, which holds so many memories.

The school will be demolished in a couple of months, and a replacement school will be completed in time for students from Mableton Elementary and Sky View Elementary to begin the new school year there.

Everyone gathered in front of the school for a massive panoramic photo, then assembled in the school's gym for a program. The school's cheerleaders performed and the chorus members sang. Former Gov. Roy Barnes, a Mableton School alumnus, was the keynote speaker for the event, and he told the attendees of his fond memories of the school.

Generations of families attended the event and browsed through old photos, news articles and yearbooks in the school's media room.
