Former South Cobb High Coach Dies

Tim Crunk also taught and coached at Sprayberry and Kennesaw Mountain high schools.

Tim Crunk, who coached at for 10 years, died on Monday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The newspaper said that Crunk, 52, apparently died from a heart attack after running. 

Crunk, who lived in Acworth, was an assistant principal and athletics director at  for the last three years. He also was a teacher and coach at Kennesaw Mountain High School, where he was a Teacher of the Year and led state runner-up softball and baseball teams, according to the AJC report.

When Crunk was appointed to his Sprayberry post in July 2009, Kennesaw Mountain football coach Scott Jones, a former Sprayberry player was delighted. He said Crunk would be a perfect fit for the 60-year-old Northeast Cobb school, since "it has such a great tradition. He understands that type of tradition because he came from South Cobb, which is also one of Cobb’s oldest schools.”

Not long after Crunk took the job, he had to act quickly to deal with a difficult situation. Sprayberry cheerleader Chelsea Jones had been charged with stealing money from children selling items at their neighborhood pool. She was removed from the squad, and Crunk told the Northeast Cobb Monitor he had no qualms about what he had to do:

“You handle it, and move on. I hate it happened for the victims and for the cheerleader involved. But, you have to protect the integrity of the school and help people at the same time. It’s too bad for all involved.”

Crunk is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Leslie, daughters Hillary and Anastasia and son Corey. 

The visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Marietta Funeral Home, 915 Piedmont Road. The funeral service is 11 a.m. Friday at , 570 Piedmont Road.

The school has indicated that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Timothy Crunk Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank Account #7196736719.
