Floyd Celebrates the Arts with 'Guitar Heroes' Exhibit

Floyd Middle School kicked off its annual art exhibit this week at the Mable House Arts Center.

kicked off its annual arts exhibit at the Mable House Arts Center on Tuesday with a record number of 746 art pieces from students.

The theme for this year’s exhibit is “Guitar Heroes.” Art teacher Lisa Collins assigned students to create their own guitar artwork inspired by prominent visual artists, like Salvador Dali or Andy Warhol.

With the Teacher IMPACT grant award Collins received from the Cobb Schools Foundation in 2011, she purchased frames, laptops for the Guitar Heroes Project and even instructional supplies for the school’s music program.

As parents, community members and students flooded the Mable House Arts Center on Tuesday night, Collins said, “I feel like a proud parent.”

Collins has been teaching art for the last 20 years.

Country radio station KICKS 101.5 also donated a guitar signed by famous country music stars to be auctioned off with all proceeds benefitting the fine arts program at Floyd. Collins’ own Starry Night guitar will also be raffled off to benefit the program. Listen here to Collins interview with KICKS DJs for the station’s “Make Your Monday” feature.

All of the artwork will be displayed in the Mable House Art Gallery until April 4.
