Cobb Schools Appoint Acting Academic Chief

The Cobb school board also appointed two elementary school principals this week.

The Cobb Board of Education has appointed assistant superintendent Amy Krause as the Cobb County School District's Acting Chief Academic Officer.

Krause, who has been in charge of curriculum, instruction and assessment since January, will begin her new role on Dec. 1. That's when Chief Academic Officer Judi Jones is retiring, after 38 years as a teacher and administrator in the 107,000-student school system.

Jones announced she was stepping down last month. She cited benefit changes in the state teacher's retirement system in an interview with The Marietta Daily Journal, which reported that at least 75 long-serving school system employees have been similarly impacted.

Jones' retirement is the latest high-level administrative departure in Cobb. Chief Financial Officer Mike Addison retired earlier this fall. Mary Kay Fermanich, Hinojosa's executive secretary, also is leaving on Dec. 1 for similar reasons.

She and Jones were recognized for their service at Wednesday's school board work session.

Krause is in her second stint with Cobb. She previously served from 1994-2010, and was in a curriculum administrative position with Fulton County Schools until returning to Cobb earlier this year.

In other personnel moves on Wednesday, the Cobb school board made the following appointments, both effective Dec. 1:

  • Susan Hallmark, assistant principal at Still Elementary School in Powder Springs, to principal at Addison Elementary in Northeast Cobb;
  • Susan Stanton, assistant principal at Teasley Elementary in Smyrna, to principal at LaBelle Elementary School in Marietta.
