Cobb School Calendar Options Proposed

The school board will discuss calendars for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years at a work session Wednesday.

By Wendy Parker

Cobb School Superintendent Michael Hinojosa is proposing two possible calendar options for each of the next two school years.

The matter will be considered at a Cobb Board of Education work session on Wednesday. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. in the board room of the Cobb County School District central office, 514 Glover Street, Marietta.

The meeting will be live-streamed on the district's website. A public comment period will take place at the start of the meeting, and an executive session has been called near the end.

Hinojosa's calendar proposals, as requested by school board chairman Randy Scamihorn, give the board options for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.

The options include a "traditional" calendar with short breaks outside of the Christmas and Thanksgiving holiday periods and spring break, and a "balanced" calendar with longer breaks typically built around other holidays.

In both sets of proposals, the school year would begin the second week of August with the traditional calendar, and the first week of August with a balanced calendar.

The school year in both years would end in mid- to late May, depending upon which calendars are adopted.

(See attached PDFs for more details and specific dates.)

Hinojosa has not recommended which version of the calendars for the board to approve.

The calendar options are being offered before Oct. 1, at the start of a new two-year calendar approval cycle, a switch in board policy after calendar controversies in 2011 and 2012.

Action on the calendars could take place at the board's Sept. 26 regular meeting.

Other items to be discussed Wednesday include the following:

  • The status of revisions to the district's staff discipline policy by board member Kathleen Angelucci. She called for a review after former Cobb teachers and administrators fired by the district for alleged misconduct had their cases dropped or dismissed in the legal system;
  • An update on the evaluation process for Hinojosa;
  • A discussion of the board's 2014 legislative priorities.
