Two New Faces Seek Election to Austell City Council

Updates on the Nov. 8 election qualifying period

The 2011 election season began on Monday with the qualifying period for Austell City Council's two open seats and mayor position.

All incumbents– Mayor Joe Jerkins, Ward 2 Councilman Scott Thomas, Ward 4 City Councilwoman Virginia Reagan and At-Large Post 2 Randy Green turned in their applications on Monday, along with two new faces.

Suzanne Thomason, a 30-year Austell resident, is seeking the position of At-Large Post 2 councilwoman. Thomason worked for 10 years at Austell Elementary. Learn more about her in her

Lance Lamberton, the head of the Cobb Taxpayers Association, is also seeking a seat on the city council. If Lamberton's name sounds familiar it's because his organization, CTA, was the main organization opposing the recent countywide SPLOST, and because he engaged in a televised debate with Rose Wing of the pro-SPLOST group, Citizens for Cobb's Future, earlier this year.

Lamberton, who is seeking the Ward 4 seat currently held by Virginia Reagan, has lived in Austell for 10 years and has about 40 years of experience as a political activist who insists that government officials be held accountable when it comes to tax and spending issues. He also worked in the Reagan White House. Check back today with South Cobb Patch to read more about him in his "Meet the Candidates" profile.

South Cobb Patch will continue to provide coverage of the 2011 election qualifying period which continues until 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 31. The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Correction: Rose Wing was incorrectly identified as Debra Wing and the Ward 4 city council seat is currently held by Virginia Reagan, not Randy Green.

The clock has not been working for years, correct. It would not save the taxpayers any money to have it working, as the city has tried to find someone to fix it to no avail, and fixing it will be very expensive. They do have a plan to reuse that space with something else, and put up an electric sign with events, time ect.
Lance also suggested at a council meeting to put Sunday liquor sales to vote. This would cost taxpayers much, as every election the city has cost $, and what a great way to bring people to Austell, to the Sunday Liquor store, not what the city needs as an attraction. He should look at the improvements in our many great parks, thanks to splosh tax revenues. Without it the parks would look as they did a few years ago. Very run down.Thank you splosh for all the great improvements.

Kirsten,
I believe that Mr. Lamberton's idea was to include the Sunday Liquor Sales vote in this current ballot, therefore not costing the city anymore money. I agree that Austell is not a side show, but from a business point of view why would you not have Sunday Liquor Sales? All citizens would have to do is go to another city to get the liquor and bring it back to the city of Austell. Business is business and well to say the least the liquor store is named after the mayor!

Nicole, What is your problem with people resting on Sunday? So they can enjoy one of the many great parks here. The city DOES NOT own the buildings, nor does the business owner own them. To get them cleaned-up the building owners would have to do that. Instead of using all your energy here get out, form a group and clean them up yourself. As far as Joe's Bottle Shop named after the mayor, why not he built the store and worked there many years, before he was Mayor of our "Great City." Go Joe you have (and will for another 4 years) served our city very well. "Vote for Randy Green, Nov. 8th."

ATP2, what is your problem with letting people decide for themselves when they want to purchase alcohol? Have you ever thought that some of us like to relax with a bottle of wine to go with lunch or dinner? I do most of my grocery shopping on Sundays. As a resident of unincorporated Cobb, it appears that if Austell and Powder Springs won't put the issue to a vote, I'll be driving to Hiram to do my grocery shopping. That means I'm purchasing not just alcohol there, but groceries and fuel too. You don't want Austell to collect my tax dollars? That's fine with me... I'm sure someone else will be happy to have them.

Exactly my point David! Therefore, the city of Austell loses the tax revenue to one of its surrounding cities! If restaurants sell alcohol on Sunday, why not liquor stores? Just because someone goes to the liquor store does not meen that they are alcoholics, sometimes people just want to sit back and relax with a glass of Merlot! And...if I do decide to form a group to help clean up the buildings in downtown Austell, can I count you in Austell Tax Payer #2?

Also, ATP2, do you enjoy any of "the many great parks" here? Just curious. I personally don't enjoy visiting a shrine to someone that is still alive. Most of the greats were deceased when their shrines were built! Just saying.

Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) is a complete farce. Operation and maintenance costs of all projects kills any savings, plus, politicians spend every penny of our money they have, even if something is not needed.
Don't give govt. anymore of our money. But Lamberton isn't the guy. He has done virtually nothing in the fight against taxes, except take credit for the work other people have done.

Please encourage residents to attend CCt flex bus meeting at the South Cobb Library on Tuesday JuneRead More 18t 6pm-8pm. The first meeting only had 11 residents there and none were bus riders. I have encouraged residents that have teens to attend meeting because this help our teens get to jobs or social activities and not just hang out in the neighborhood. We must also plan for the future and underswtrand that just because you are driving today, it may not be the case all the time. Your situation can change with a blink of an eye.
