Students & Community Members Play "Lawmaker for a Day"

State Rep. Alisha Morgan hosts her Ninth Lobby Day event at the state capitol, allowing students and constituents to learn the in's and out's of the legislative system.

More than 100 constituents and students from South Cobb spent their Thursday at the Capitol experiencing the inner workings of the legislature for State Rep. Alisha Morgan’s Ninth Annual Lobby Day. Allowing the members of the community, and especially students, see what they can accomplish means a lot to Morgan, who first took office as a state representative at 23.

The students and constituents discussed real bills, with volunteer attendees filling the roles of authors of the bills, committee chairpersons and representatives. These mock sessions allowed the attendees to discuss the bills and possible amendments and vote. If the bill passed, it would then move to a mock legislative session over lunch, mimicking the real process.

Students and constituents also had their picture taken with Governor Nathan Deal and were allowed access to the House Gallery to see the actual legislators at work.

"It's important because students need to know, just as well as parents and adults, how the process works, how we can get involved, how we can stay alert, how we can stay updated and know that we can also cause change," expressed Pebblebrook High School Senior David Wheaton.
