Besides approving $2.9 million for new math instructional resources for the coming school year, the Cobb Board of Education also voted Wednesday to take $3.2 million from reserve funding to fill in a budget gap.

The Cobb tax digest dropped 1.28 percent, causing a $7.2 million shortfall, and the district also has to pay an additional $1.2 million to charter schools in Kennesaw and Smyrna due to rising enrollment.

But the district got some relief when the state reduced its Quality Basic Education austerity cut from $72 million to $66 million, and with an additional $2.2 million in Cobb tag and motor vehicle revenue, according to chief financial officer Brad Johnson.

The board also voted to approve a state contract worth $530,000 for 17 marked police vehicles for the district's public safety department.

The new cars would be patrolling at each of the county's 16 high schools.

"Having a marked vehicle on a campus is one of the best deterrents to crime that we have," said Cobb deputy superintendent Chris Ragsdale.
