BOC to Vote on New Sidewalks, HAWK Signals for Six Flags Drive

The project is part of a 2005 Transportation Improvement Program.

Residents in the Six Flags Drive area will soon have new sidewalks and a pedestrian safety signal. Cobb commissioners will vote on a $759,088 contract with CMES, Inc. for the sidewalk construction.

Pedestrian safety has long been a concern for residents of the area; nearly every study conducted of the area has included notes that sidewalks are needed for the pedestrian-heavy area.

Six Flags Drive is an approved project in the Sidewalk Component of the 2005 Transportation Improvement Program and is also designated as a Georgia Department of Transportation project.

Along with construction of additional sidewalks on the southside of Six Flags Drive, from Crestside Drive to Interstate 20 westbound on-ramp at Riverside Parkway, the project will include filling in gaps where sidewalks do not connect.

Additionally, the project includes the installation of two pedestrian signals, or HAWK signals, to provide a safe mid-block crossing. HAWK stands for High Intensity Activated Crosswalks, and it works similarly to button-activated traffic signals. The two signals would be the first in the county and should be completed by summer 2012.
