10 Years Later: South Cobb Soldiers Among Iraq War Casualties

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week on March 19 and although officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.

The U.S-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago on March 19, 2003. By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 141 Georgians.

Among them are two soldiers from Austell. From the CNN war casualties website:

  • Spc. Jaiciae London Pauley, 29, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team|3rd Infantry Division. Died from injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident in Kirkuk, Iraq, on Dec. 11, 2009.
  • Spc. Marvin Antonio Campo-Siles, 25, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. Died when he was electrocuted while performing routine generator maintenance in Samarra, Iraq, on April 17, 2004.
