Three Killed in Austell Accident

Speeding is being blamed for an early Sunday crash on Clay Road.

Three young Cobb County men died early Sunday in a one-car accident on Clay Road in Austell that police are attributing to speeding.

Cobb Police Officer Michael Bowman said in a release that Michael A. Haynes, 20, of Austell, Jacolby D. Lowe, 24, of Marietta and Jerod A. Lowe, 21, of Marietta, were all pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police said Haynes was the driver of a silver 2008 Nissan Altima that was heading westbound on Clay Road, just west of Flint Hill Road. Bowman said the car was traveling "at a speed well above the posted speed limit" when it approached a right curve.

Haynes could not control the Altima as it began spinning in the curve. The car then left the road, hitting a tree, Bowman said.

He said alcohol is not considered a factor but that the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office will be conducting drug and alcohol tests.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Cobb Police at 770-499-3987.
