Shooting Victim's Brother Speaks; Apartment Residents Give Take on Shooting

Following the shooting of an Austell man in the Austell apartment complex, Parkview Apartments, last week, residents of the complex are speaking out about the suspected shooter.

The brother of an Austell man who was fatally shot at an Austell apartment complex spoke out Sunday.

According to Cobb police investigators, 27-year-old Andre Oliver was shot on Tuesday evening in the Parkview Apartments parking lot by the Parkview Apartments security guard after they were involved in a physical altercation.

The security guard thought to be responsible for the shooting has not been identified and has not been charged.

"I didn't believe it at first," Raquan Oliver, Andre's 23-year-old brother, told South Cobb Patch on Sunday. "Hopefully, he'll (the security guard) get arrested. That's crazy (that) you can kill somebody and then go walk around the streets."

Several Parkview residents said the security guard often harassed them.

"He'd just harass people for nothing," Raquan Oliver said of the security guard. He said the guard once told him that he couldn't sit outside the apartment in his own car, for example.

Another man, who wished to remain unnamed, called the guard "trigger-happy."

But not all residents described the guard this way.

Laurina Sherman, a resident of the complex, said the guard was always professional and friendly. She never witnessed him brandishing a weapon, she said.

"People who don't follow laws don't like authority," Sherman said of the allegations that the guard was constantly antagonizing residents.

A 22-year-old resident of the complex, who wished to remain unnamed, had similar feelings about the guard.

"At the end of the day, he's just trying to enforce the rules. I wasn't there. I mean, he's not the type to vengeantly retaliate. I see him as just doing his job," the man said.

"If it was retailiation, it's wrong, but if it's a case of self-defense then he has to do what he has to do," the man said.
