UPDATE: Police Officers Throughout Cobb Hold Vigil for Fallen Officer's Family, Friends

Atlanta Police Senior Officer Gail Thomas of Austell was killed Tuesday after being struck by a driver police said was drunk.

Dozens of police officers from all over Cobb County united on Sunday night for a prayer vigil with the friends and family of fallen Atlanta Senior Police Officer Gail Thomas at Thomas’ Austell home.

Thomas, 46 and a 20-year veteran of the police force, was killed Tuesday after a driver, who police said was driving drunk, struck her.

It was silent on Hidden Holm Lane in Austell, where Thomas lived, on Sunday night, as her family stood on the sidewalk in front of her home and watched the flashing blue lights of police cars from Cobb County, Austell, Powder Springs and Atlanta police departments.

Almost 50 police officers saluted and shook the hands of Thomas' family and friends before Cobb Police Chaplain Mike Cronin prayed with them. The officers, family, neighbors and media took a 30-second moment of silence to remember Thomas and what she meant.

Under the flashing blue lights, members of the various police departments told the family and friends of a beloved civil servant just how much they cared, and in turn, they were filled with appreciation.

"It showed us–she was already our hero, but that she was a hero to everyone, " said Kimberly Osburn, Thomas' friend of 30 years.

Cobb Officer D. Patel, who serves South Cobb's Precinct 2 and lived next door to Thomas, said she remembered waving goodbye on Tuesday morning as her friend drove away.

"I waved goodbye to her, told her to be safe, and she left to go to work. It was the last time I saw her," Patel said.

The prayer vigil was organized by Cobb Police Officer S.T. Selvia, who patrols the South Cobb area where Thomas lived.

"I wanted to reach out to the family and just let them know that we care about them, just let them know that they're not alone. If they need anything, we're all standing behind them," Selvia said.

According to news reports, Thomas arrived on the scene to help a fellow officer and was struck as she got out of her patrol car at the Brookwood Interchange ramp Interstate 75 South at I-85 North ramp. She died at the scene.

Chasity Jones, a 22-year-old Longhorn Steakhouse waitress from Stone Mountain, is being held in the Fulton County Jail without bond and has been charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence and reckless driving.

According to reports, Jones’ blood alcohol level was .16, twice the legal intoxication limit.

Visitation for Thomas was held Sunday at. Her funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Cascade’s Elizabeth Baptist Church. Burial will immediately follow at Mount Harmony Cemetery at Veterans Memorial Highway in Mableton.

Also on Sunday, at the Hartsfield-Jackson airport, Thomas’ fellow APD Honor Guard members awaited the arrival of a U.S. honor flag, which flew over Ground Zero in New York City. The flag, which has been displayed at thousands of public safety officers’ funerals, will be used in Thomas’ funeral service Monday.
