Is the Concord Road Covered Bridge a Hazard?

Do you think the covered bridge is a safety hazard?

Concord Road was closed for several hours Tuesday afternoon while Cobb police worked to clear an accident on the covered bridge at the border of Mableton and Smyrna.

The department’s Public Information Officer Dana Pierce said the damage wasn’t as serious as past accidents at the bridge.

“It doesn’t sound like the worst like it usually is where they knock most of the covered bridge down, but it probably is reduced them going through there,” he said. “I don’t think it’s anything serious, I think just think it’s a typical property damage crash.”

As Pierce said, this isn’t the first accident on the one-lane bridge. In April 2011 a woman driving a U-Haul truck tried to drive through the bridge. This caused an iron height barrier post to fall and block the roadway to traffic.

At the time of the accident Mableton resident Ron Gause who lives directly behind the bridge that crosses Nickajack Creek said there are accidents there "all the time."

"This is one of the highest accident areas in Cobb County," Gause said.

It's not a big "accident" site, it's a big "we're not reading the signs and using our comment sense" site. If you are going towards Mableton, there are signs all over the place about, first the one-lane bridge, and then the covered bridge which is 7' high. They made a place at the walking trail parking lot where people can turn around. On the other side, luckily there is South Hurt Road that people can turn down. But if you aren't sure you will fit, park somewhere and measure, or just flat out don't go that way. I really am tired of not being able to go that way because some idiot tried to drive an 8' truck through a 7' opening.

The bridge and road are NOT a hazard!! The hazard is the people who drive through there and refuse to acknowledge all of the signs saying what height is allowed. The other hazard is the people who refuse to acknowledge the YIELD SIGNS. Each car should yield on each side, one care goes through from the left then one from the right, etc. Not five cars from one side at a time. Come on people, you are not the only ones on the road, and no one is better than the next person. Read the signs, follow the law, and all will be safe. I have gone through the bridge to work and home for the last 22 years. I have never seen an accident there that was truly just and accident. They have all been because someone failed to follow the posted signs. They have even installed a turn around and a pull off. THERE IS NO EXCUSE.

Heck NO ! ! ! It's the stupid drivers who think they can just fly through there without being considerate and obeying the signs. It is a historical site in my opinion and needs to remain as is. If people don't like it, go another way.

I agree with the others comments, the bridge itself is NOT a hazard. It's the stupid drivers that cause the problems. I've seen work vans with ladders on them get stuck, someone try to drive a semi truck through there, and a 'Two Men and a Truck' get stuck there also. The previous comments are correct though, it has nothing to do with the bridge being safe, but the lack of intelligence of the drivers and them not paying attention to the signs and the height of their vehicles.

What does it say about a government education system when you need an IQ test to cross a bridge?

Amen! There's not much we can do about stupid people doing stupid things.
