Investigation of Cobb Officer Shooting Completed

A grand jury found Officer Sean Henry had acted lawfully when he shot and killed Matt Murdock of Cumming in May 2011 during a traffic stop.

The investigation of the May 19 incident in Mableton where a Cobb County Police officer shot and killed a Cumming man is now closed and final.

The Cobb Public Safety Department of Internal Affairs has completed its investigation and the findings will be made public after a 10-day period.

On May 19, Matt According to Cobb police, a Cobb Sheriff’s deputy, who stopped to assist, had a physical confrontation with Murdock. Cobb Officer Sean Henry arrived, saw the struggle and fired shots, police said, after he saw Murdock reach for what he believed to be a weapon.

The preliminary draft of the lengthy investigative report had been created by Sgt. S. Bell of the Cobb Public Safety Department and was ready for review in November.

In September, a grand jury found Henry had acted lawfully when he shot and killed Murdock.
