Fatal Hit and Run in Austell

Bicyclist killed when vehicle crashed into him.

A man on a bicycle was killed early this morning in Austell when a vehicle struck him and then fled the scene.

The incident occurred on Clay Road near Warren Drive.

According to the Cobb County Police Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, which is investigating the incident, 43-year-old Ernest Terrell Maxwell of Austell was traveling on a bicycle eastbound on Clay Road towards Austell Road. While he was in the vicinity of Warren Drive Maxwell was struck from behind by a vehicle. He was thrown from the bicycle and the vehicle fled from the area.

Maxwell was pronounced deceased at the scene.Β 

Police said that based on evidence collected from the scene, and from witness accounts, investigators have put together a suspect vehicle description: a silver or light-colored four-door mid-size 2002 to 2009 model Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV.

The vehicle is believed to have damage to its right front, including damage to the right front headlight assembly, right front fender, right side of the front bumper. Police also said it is missing an antenna.Β 

The vehicle was driven by a male and it was last seen traveling eastbound towards Austell Road.Β
