Austell Woman Arrested in Tax Scheme

She allegedly pretended to be a tax preparer.

An Austell woman who allegedly pretended to be a tax preparer submitted a bogus 1040 to the Internal Revenue Service to increase the client's refund.

Chaunice Shaynae Knight allegedly knew that the client had no education credits or employer-withheld taxes, but placed "values for education credits on line 49 and employer withheld federal income tax on line 62 with the intent to increase the refund," according to an arrest warrant.

Knight, police said, deposited the refund into her own account.

She was arrested Tuesday on a charge of first degree forgery. She is in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $5,000 bond.
