Updated: Man Arrested in Fatal Austell Hit and Run Incident

Powder Springs man reported "striking an object" late Saturday afternoon.

The search for the silver Chevrolet Trailblazer that allegedly hit an Austell man ended late Saturday afternoon when a 37-year-old Powder Springs man came into a Cobb County Police station to report damage to his vehicle, police said Saturday.

Brian Alan Rolle told police about 5:15 p.m. that his 2004 Trailblazer hit an object early Saturday morning and that he wanted to file a report on the incident, Cobb police spokesman Joe Hernandez said.

“The damage was consistent with evidence from the hit and run investigation,” Hernandez said in an e-mail statement about the incident.

Rolle then was charged with first degree hit and run, driving with an expired tag and vehicular homicide in connection with the death of 43-year-old Ernest Terrell Maxwell of Austell who was hit from behind while riding his bicycle early Saturday morning.

Rolle is being held without bond at the Cobb County Jail.

According to police, Maxwell was traveling on a bicycle eastbound on Clay Road towards Austell Road. While he was in the vicinity of Warren Drive, Maxwell was struck from behind by a Trailblazer. He was thrown from the bicycle and the vehicle fled from the area, according to initial reports.

Maxwell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on evidence collected from the scene, and from witness accounts, investigators on Saturday put together a suspect vehicle description: a silver or light-colored four-door mid-size 2002 to 2009 model Chevrolet Trailblazer similar to that driven by Rolle.
