Is Seth MacFarlane the Right Choice to Host Oscars?

The mind behind “Family Guy” will be in front of millions of families Sunday as he hosts the 85th Academy Awards. Tell us if you believe he’s the right man for the job.

The man that brought us Peter Griffin and an alive but vulgar teddy bear named Ted, among other memorable characters, will head up Hollywood’s biggest night Sunday.

Seth MacFarlane was announced late last year as the host of the 85th Academy Awards, which airs Sunday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. EST on ABC.

Though MacFarlane’s entertainment résumé is long, he is perhaps best known as the creator of Family Guy and one of the minds behind two other animated shows on Fox, American Dad! and The Cleveland Show. Just last year, he made an impact on the big screen with a movie he wrote, directed and produced—Ted—which opened with the highest weekend box-office take for an original R-rated comedy at $54.1 million.

Interestingly enough, when MacFarlane finishes his hosting duties he just might be heading home with an Oscar of his own—he wrote the lyrics to “Everybody Needs A Best Friend” from Ted, one of the nominees in the Original Song category.

It remains to be seen how close MacFarlane’s jokes on Sunday’s Oscar telecast will approach the off-color humor he is known for in many of his works.

Would you have chosen Seth MacFarlane to host the Oscars? Who would you like to see host the telecast?

He is a wildly talented guy and he is also a self-proclaimed Atheist. He sings, writes and plays piano beautifully. However, I have a problem with a lot of his writing. He writes inappropriate material that goes out in the form of a cartoon so kids may be watching and parents may never suspect what is really being shown to their kids. As much as I appreciate his talent I wish he were not hosting the Oscars.

@Mary, Family Guy is by no means a children's cartoon, and If parents do not know what Family Guy is about, then they should not let their children watch, and actually monitor what they ARE watching-as parents are supposed to do! I love Seth and his work, and I would not normally watch the Oscars, but will watch only because he is hosting. The people chosen to host through the years and in the future, will not always appeal to everyone. As in my case.

I agree! He is just so good at being funny!

...and that he is an atheist is somehow germaine to the discussion because?
