NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Continues Progress on Veterans Build

NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity is building a home for a disabled veteran in need, with the help of donated land from the late veteran Colonel Ashley Ivey.

Northwest Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity’s first ever Veterans Build is underway and construction is progressing quickly!

Heath & Lineback Engineers, Inc. is this week’s sponsor and will be working alongside the future homeowner and other Habitat volunteers. This fourth week of construction includes completing the siding and exterior painting of the Ivey House. The home is named in honor of Colonel Ashley Ivey who generously donated land to NW Metro Atlanta Habitat exclusively for building a house for a disabled veteran.  NW Metro Atlanta Habitat intends to not only carry out Col. Ivey’s wish with this build, but also to build a house for a veteran each year, with the Ivey House being the first.

The following week’s construction, Aug. 30, is sponsored by WellStar Acworth Health Park. WellStar Health System is Northwest Georgia’s largest not-for-profit healthcare provider. “Not-for-profit” means that instead of distributing revenues to individual shareholders, they reinvest revenues into new WellStar programs and enhanced services for the benefit of the community.  During this fifth week of the veterans build the interior painting and trim on the house will be completed by WellStar volunteers.

In addition to the sponsors of weeks four and five, Wells Fargo West Atlanta Division, Call2Recycle® and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics are other sponsors who have made this build possible. Each week these sponsors, who have made significant donations, also provide volunteer labor to help complete the home.

Nearly 68,000 veterans reside in NW Metro Atlanta Habitat’s service area of Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties, according to the United States Census Bureau. With nearly 15% of all disabled veterans living in poverty, there is a huge need in our area for NW Metro Atlanta Habitat’s work to provide a ‘hand-up’ to veterans and other hard working, well-qualified, lower-income families.
