Neighborhood Summit 2012

The Neighborhood Summit is an annual event to bring communities together to share ideas and expertise.

I attended the Neighborhood Summit last Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia. The neighborhood Summit is an iniatitive sponsored by the Neighborhood Fund, United Way, The civic League and Atlanta Regional Commission. The event gives an opportunity for community groups, neighborhood associations, non-profits, churchs, elected officials and school representatives to share ideas and expertise about their neighborhoods and being involved in your community. This year event attracted neighborhoods community groups from 23 counties in the state of Georgia. Fulton County, Gwinnett County, and  Dekalb County were represented very well. Representatives from Cobb County was present, although we may not have been a huge group but we were there. Annette Hughs, Cobb County Business owner, won one of the two prizes.   Anne Taylor attended the event as well Joel Cope, president of Mableton Improvement coalition. I, along with three other members of Austell- Six-Flags Opportunity Zone Committee were very appreciative of the opportunity to to take part in the summit. We were able to hear about one Stone Mountain neighborhood who came together to build a kaboom playground. I attended workshop about organing comunity cafe's and sharing knowledge which was presented by representatives of Families First who have been doing community capacity building in the community of Edgewood, located in East Atlanta. Also the the workshop highlighted a mobile park home community in Norcross who had to overcome language barriers to be able to share resources.

The event was a success and hopefully next year we can fill the Loudermilk building with Cobb County neighborhoods. Afterall we are the best.
