Cobb Commission Steps in it Again

Just when you thought that the Board of Commissioners (BoC) couldn’t top the last stupid thing they did, here we go again.

Under the cover of secrecy from the voters that elected them on promises of lower taxes and prudent expenditures, (Vote for me, I’m a conservative Republican) they gave away $300 million (and counting) to the first con artist to knock on their door.

It was bad enough that they gave all that money away, and then they decided after their stealth decision to pretend like they were actually soliciting citizen input. They had commissioner town hall meetings that the Braves public relations company packed with people wearing Braves shirts and carrying Braves signs. Regular citizens couldn’t get a seat or a chance to voice their opinions before or after the decision. Instead of looking like a democracy, it looked like a farce.

Not having learned anything about Democracy or public relations, they stepped in it again. The Cobb BoC, decided to be excessively clever again and keep any non-approved input from being presented to the Tuesday night meeting. By blocking anyone, except the designated Brave boosters, from speaking, the BoC looked clumsy and anti-democratic again.

This was so unnecessary. It’s not like a District Attorney or Sheriff in Cobb ever looked closely at political funny stuff. The Georgia Attorney General is an old East Cobb Commissioner. The whole thing would fade away if Tim Lee and friends could just keep their mouths shut and their heads down.

There was no way that the citizens of Cobb would be represented at the BoC, so why put on the show? Thanks to the poor quality and resulting low subscription numbers of the “Conservative Voice of the South”, the MDJ, most moderate and independent voters are unaware of what is happening in their county. The BoC could have run around naked in Marietta Square and no one would have noticed. So why have pretend meetings, with pretend input from designated citizens?

I applaud the good citizens who tried unsuccessfully to speak at the BoC meeting. It was rigged but when the BoC had police throw out these good citizens, even the most uninformed Cobb voter could smell the odor of what the BoC had stepped in and were trying to call it the sweet smell of democracy.

What if we had 9 commissioners and the chair was elected by the commissioners? Independent and moderate voters would see a game that wasn’t totally rigged and allowed for citizen input. Big contributors and the Chamber of Commerce would have less say. The BoC meetings couldn’t be scripted in advance. Democracy is a little slow and messy which runs contrary to how things are done in Cobb. You can’t give away $3oo million, when Cobb citizens have anything to say about it.
