The Future of South Cobb Rests with All of Us

Lisa Cupid, runoff candidate for County Commissioner, asserts that South Cobb's progression will be the result of collective, not individual, effort.

When I began campaigning for county commissioner my oldest son, Nehemiah, was barely 3. My youngest son, Noah, was 1.

Assuredly my run for office was not borne out of convenience or conceit. Nor is it based on the idea that I have all the answers.

I, like you, simply am convinced that South Cobb can do better.

While my professional experiences in government, development, and engineering may indicate some propensity to do well, it is my life experience and also my convictions that best qualify me to serve. I know what it is like to work and work hard at home, at work, and in the community with the expectation of results. And while we may have had some results in South Cobb, as identified by current leadership, I, like so many of you, do not think those results are sufficiently reflective of what this area deserves.

When I consider the judgment of those who claim responsibility for results in South Cobb I am all the more assured that I made the right decision.

While the rest of Cobb and the metro area have been taking steps to move forward, this area has been stuck in some type of time warp. And I realize now, more than ever, this time warp is beyond bricks and mortar. It is in the mindset of those who have taken the progression of persons here for granted. The people of this area need to be put first in how Cobb does business. This means respecting the investment of those who have been here for generations while likewise respecting those who have come thereafter.

The desire to have and create a place we are all safe in, proud of, and connected to is no different  across age, gender, race, income level, or years of Cobb residency.

While the commissioner touts his age and 12 years of experience as reasons why he will be successful over the next four years, I tell you that the experience or the effort of one person will not be sufficient to move this area forward. We all will need to work together to make our area what it should be.

The same goes for my family. My children’s growth is not just dependent on my individual effort, but on the effort of many who care for and love them. I thank my husband first and foremost. I also thank my parents, sisters, neighbors and friends for their collective support of me and my family. Without all of them, my family could never be the best we are destined to be.

The same goes for South Cobb.  Although a small group of persons with generational connections can claim the credit for development of this area, this area will not be all that it can be with one set of people patting each other on the back. This area needs the involvement and support of ALL who live here. Prayerfully, at the end of the day it will not be one, but all of us looking back and saying, “Look at what WE have done.”

My campaign was built on the slogan of being a partner for Cobb.   I ask for your help in its fulfillment. Please vote Tuesday, August 21 for Lisa Cupid in the Democratic runoff.
