Four students form Cobb area schools and a former Cobb student received cash awards for writing winning essays on the topic: The Importance of a second term for President Barack Obama
The purpose of the contest essays judged by faculty of Marietta Middle School was to provide the Guide Right students of the Alpharetta-Smyrna Alumni (ASA) Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. an opportunity, outside of their normal school curriculum, to strengthen and enhance their literary skills as well as increase their knowledge of local and national issues.

Students writing the top entries were recognized at the year-ending Student Achievement Ceremony at the Fair Oaks Recreation Center in Marietta on Saturday May 19, 2012 attended by 150 students and parents. The winning students receiving checks from Lawrence King and Ms Debra Evans were:

Schlander Grandison, 12th grade was preparing to graduate from the Piney Woods School on May 26th and was unable to attend. The featured guest speaker for the event was Dr. Stanley J Pritchett, Sr. President Morris Brown College.
Jerome Thomas Evans III was a member of the Alpharetta-Smyrna Alumni (ASA) Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, who lost his life in a tragic accident at Hartsfield Jackson Airport just after the Presidential election in 2008.
Evans widow, Ms Debra Evans shared personal thoughts concerning the occasion to the assembled audience and thanked each student recipient for their participation and their ability to express themselves in a logical, convincing, and intelligent manner.
