INTRO TO CARPENTRY/ KEEPSAKE BOXES

April 7th    Project overview, safety, tool review, and understanding different types of wood. How to read a tape measure, test, measuring and cutting parts for our project

  • Introduction and instruction from the Executive Director, Anna Dossou and Senior Instructor, Charles Bradshaw (“Instructor”). 

 

  • Overview of all functions and expectation of the current workshop
  • The instructor will introduce and thoroughly cover all tools, materials and safety items that will be used during the first workshop.

 

  • Tool and material usage: The instructor will demonstrate and go over how to correctly hold and use each tool listed at the beginning of each workshop.

 

  • The instructor will also go over the importance of classroom safety when utilizing the power tools (compressor, sander, and saws). 

 

  • All areas utilized during the workshop will be covered with plastic covers and securely taped protecting all floors, table and counter tops.

 

  • Sample wood:  The instructor will describe the different types of wood while using sample woods to demonstrate the correct ways each type is to be measured and cut.

                    

  • All students will be taught how to properly use a 12” tape measure and taught the proper way to use and read the tape measure. 

 

  • The instructor will administer a 4 to 5 question test in an effort to gauge each student’s ability to retain information and the student’s ability to correctly utilize tape measure.

 

  • All test will be pencil and paper and written on a table top easel

 

  • Measuring and cutting parts: Each student will be responsible for measuring his/her own wood.  Measurements will vary according to the individual student proven skill level, challenging the student’s basic ability to grasp how to read the tape measure. 

 

  • Students will be taught how to measure then cut poplar and plywood.  Students will learn to properly rip wood using the table saw and how to cut in angles using the miter saw.


 

 

April 21st Assembly of wood and putty

                  Instruction:

  • The instructor will illustrate and instruct students how to assemble each part of the keepsake box by using the nail puncher. 

 

  • Student will learn how to use a nail punch to drive the head of a nail below and flush the penny nail with the surrounding surface using the wood putty. 

 

  • The assembly in this session will be a lengthy detailed process.  The instructor will show students to how to utilize a hammer and illustrate to students the proper way of fitting and nailing.

 

  • Students will go through the process of retrofitting, to ensure that both the top and bottom of box fit correctly.

 

May 5th   Sanding and prep for priming

Instruction:

  • Students will be instructed to hand sand both parts of the keepsake box using the 80 grit sandpaper.  The mouse sander with 120 grit sandpaper will be used to smooth and detail the keepsake box.

 

  • After the smoothing process, students will prep their boxes for priming with a wet cleaning cloth to wipe down and remove any remaining dust particles left on the box. 

           

May 19th Learning what primer is used for, test, review spray gun tool for priming, prime project using a spray gun

Instruction:

  • The instructor will go over and discuss the reasons to use primer.

 

  •  An important five question primer quiz will be given.

 

  • Students will learn the correct way to assembly the air hose and spray gun to the pancake air compressor.

 

  • Each student will take a turn and spray his/her individual box with primer using the compressor.

 

  • The box fan will be set up to dry individual boxes.  Boxes should be stored until next session.
