Stormy Weather Rolls Through Cobb

Wednesday's tornado killed a man in Bartow County; heavy rains caused multiple accidents throughout metro Atlanta.

Cobb County, northwest metro Atlanta and north Georgia were hit with severe weather Wednesday as a powerful thunderstorm system moved quickly through a good portion of the state.

Multiple news reports indicate that at least one person in Bartow County has been killed because of the weather; keep up with the latest updates on Cartersville Patch.

The Georgia State Patrol has confirmed that a tornado touched down in the Bartow community of Adairsville, and that traffic on Interstate 75 was shut down in both directions in that area.

Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in Bartow and Gordon County, where eight people were reported injuried.

Cobb also was under a severe thunderstorm warning for a time on Wednesday afternoon.

A tornado watch was in effect for most of metro Atlanta, including Cobb, and north and central Georgia until Wednesday evening.

Roads were hazardous with standing water, and accidents were reported throughout the metro area.

Several accidents on I-75 in Cobb jammed traffic by mid-afternoon Wednesday, according to WSB Radio: southbound near Wade Green Road; southbound near the North Marietta Parkway; and southbound near Canton Road, where injuries were reported.

Another injury crash was reported at Dallas Highway and Barrett Parkway in West Cobb.

A tractor trailer traveling on the outer loop of Interstate 285 jack-knifed near South Cobb Drive, causing delays in that area.

At 12:41 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for northern Cobb, Paulding, Bartow, Cherokee and north central Fulton counties until 1:30 p.m.

Doppler Radar showed a thunderstorm southwest of Dallas capable of producing a tornado.

That storm line went through Acworth and Kennesaw in Cobb, then continued into the Woodstock, Holly Springs and Canton areas, as well as Alpharetta, Milton and Johns Creek.

The Cobb County School District issued a statement around 2 p.m saying that school dismissals would take place on time and after school programs would continue as scheduled.

However, all school-related extracurricular activities were cancelled for Wednesday, including sports, music and meetings.
