South Cobb Road Work Updates, May 20-24

Check out the latest updates on road constructions, delays and detours around South Cobb and other parts of the county.

Here are the latest updates on road work being done around Smyrna-Vinings and Cobb County, according to the Cobb Department of Transportation.

Hopkins Road Bridge Replacement

Beginning May 28, Cobb SOT staff is scheduled to begin work replacing the existing, substandard, weight-restricted bridge on Hopkins Road over Wildhorse Creek. In addition, pedestrian accommodations will be enhanced with the extension of the sidewalk on the west side to connect to the Silver Comet Trail. 

Hopkins Road will be closed at the bridge for approximately two months once work begins. Signed detour routes will be provided during construction. This is a joint project between the City of Powder Springs and Cobb County.

Floyd Road Construction

Clay Road to Hicks Road: Expect periodic lane closures 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one lane remaining open.

Pedestrian Access: Temporary sidewalks are in place are to assist pedestrians while crews install new sidewalks along the east side of Floyd Road. All existing CCT bus stops will be maintained during construction.

County Services Parkway Sidewalks

Expect periodic lane closures with one lane remaining open in both directions between Austell Road to Powder Springs Road.

Concord Road Construction

South Cobb Drive to Atlanta Road: Expect intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one lane remaining open in each direction at all times. 

Evelyn Street: The intersection with Concord Road will be permanently closed as work starts.

Johnson Ferry at Riverside Drive

The Johnson Ferry/Abernathy project developed through collaboration among the GDOT, Cobb County and the City of Sandy Springs is nearing completion.

New traffict signal displays are now in effect at the intersection of Johnson Ferry Road and Riverside Drive, prohibiting right turns on red onto Riverside Drive from Johnson Ferry Road southbound.

Cooper Lake Road Sidewalk Construction

Laurel Springs Way to South Cobb Drive: Expect intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Frida. One lane will remain open at all times.

The contractor will be installing construction signs, erosion control and begin clearing, excavation and grading. Utility relocation should not affect your service.

Lower Roswell Road Construction

Davidson Road to Willow Point Parkway

Expect delays and lane closures from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one lane open for your commute.

Willow Point Pkwy to Timber Ridge Road

One lane will remain open for commute from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Little Willeo Road

Expect intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, from Karls Gate Drive to Lake Fjord Pass. One lane will remain open.

Paper Mill Road at Sope Creek

Expect periodic lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. One lane will remain open for your commute.

Starting May 28, Cobb DOT will start replacing the bridge over Sope Creek on Paper Mill Road. The new bridge will include a six-foot sidewalk on the south side, providing access to the National Park Service trails. Paper Mill Road will be closed at the bridge for approximately four months. Signed detour routes will be provided during construction.

I-285 Top-End Resurfacing

Expect delays as Georgia DOT continues working on a $56 million resurfacing project on I-285. Crews will resurface 10 miles of I-285 between Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County and Ashford Dunwoody Road in DeKalb County. Most work will take place nights and weekends. The project is scheduled to complete in August.

I-575 at Barrett Parkway

Georgia DOT continues work on the intersection and ramps at I-575 and Barrett Parkway. This project is scheduled to complete in June 2013.

Bells Ferry Road Resurfacing

Expect delays Monday through Friday on Bells Ferry Road from Cobb Parkway to I-575 during asphalt paving operations. One lane will remain open at all times.

The section from I-575 to Chastain Road is nearly complete and the remaining section from Chastain Road to Cobb Parkway will be completed later this summer.

Mabry Road

May 20-24: Contractor will begin installing construction signs and erosion control.

May 31 after 6 p.m. through June 9: Mabry Road is scheduled to be closed during this time, subject to change due to weather or construction progress. Signed detour routes will be provided during construction.

New Chastain Road Bridge Replacement

Starting May 24, Cobb DOT will begin work replacing the westbound bridge on New Chastain Road over Noonday Creek. This will result in closing the westbound lanes for four months or longer. Westbound traffic will be detoured to the eastbound bridge, which will provide one lane in each direction during construction.

Shiloh Road/Shallowford Road Construction

  • Wade Green Road to Canton Road: Expect periodic lane closures from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday with one lane open.
  • Shallowford Road to Rocky Mountain Road: Expect lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday with one lane remaining open at all times.

Barrett Parkway Construction

  • Northbound/Burnt Hickory Road to Cobb Parkway (US 41): Expect periodic lane closures from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Friday with one lane open at all times.
  • Southbound/Cobb Place to Burnt Hickory Road: Expect periodic lane closures from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday with one lane open.

Jiles Road Construction

  • Cobb Pkwy to CSX Railroad Bridge: Expect periodic lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one lane remaining open.

Casteel Road Sidewalks Construction

Expect periodic lane closures from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. between Ballard Drive to Dallas Highway (SR 120)
