STOP THE INSANITY!!

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Unfortunately, this is how most Americans view their health which is matched by a country of unhealthy people...

I was recently researching how well our “healthcare” system performs compared to all other nations in the world, and I found some startling statistics. First of all, we spend by far the most on health care with 2009 expenditures of $2.47 trillion. To put that into perspective, here’s an interesting link to what a trillion dollars looks like.

Wow, right?

That leads one to make some assumptions…since we spend that much money, you would think we would rank first as the healthiest nation right?

Wrong.

The United States ranks 28th in the world in infant mortality, 24th in health life expectancy, and an astonishing 37th overall in the performance of its healthcare system.

Ouch.  Not something to be proud of.

Those statistics just beg for answers, don’t they? How well is our health care system working? Does it make sense to wait until we get sick, and then treat the disease? Is it really healthcare? Wouldn’t a more apt name be disease care? Wouldn’t it make more sense to have a system that focuses on prevention? Even more than that, is there a model of health care that creates and promotes health for you, instead of treating disease?

And there are many more questions…

The current debate over national health care has been focused almost exclusively on achieving greater access to the healthcare system and reducing the prices we pay for it.  Simply put, I don’t think we’re focusing on the right things.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to focus on improving the quality of the healthcare system?  Better yet, focusing our attention on lifestyle education to promote health instead of reacting to the vast majority of the diseases that are a result of the choices we make.

It’s a brand new way to think about your health, but it just makes much more sense doesn’t it? And it just might be the answer for our healthcare system.  Actions that actually promote health!!  Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.  It’s time for the insanity of our healthcare system to stop and a new paradigm to begin.

The choices begin with you.
