REP. WILKERSON TO PARTICIPATE IN SERIES OF EDUCATION FORUMS

Legislator to discuss constitutional amendment on November ballot

The amendment seeks to create a new government agency with the ability to approve charter schools throughout Georgia.

If passed, the amendment will allow for the creation of a non-elected board, appointed by state leaders, to make educational decisions for parents over the objections of local school districts. These districts are already facing layoffs, teacher furloughs, larger class sizes, and shortened school calendars.

The amendment is strongly supported by out of state charter school businesses and others including Alice Walton of the Walmart family. Walton personally gave $250,000 to the cause. It is opposed by groups including Georgia PTA, the NAACP, and all leading educational groups including Georgia Association of Educators, Georgia Federation of Teachers, Professional Association of Georgia Educators, and the Georgia School Boards Association. State School Superintendent John Barge and Rev. Joseph Lowery have also announced their opposition to creating another level of government based in Atlanta.
